About These Plants

Terrarium plant greenhouse Alocasia in a terrarium Fittonia in a terrarium ZZ plant in a terrarium Vivarium plant greenhouse
Plants are categorized here when they don't easily fit elsewhere in our store. Some of these might be most most appropriate as a funky or interesting houseplant, whereas others are totally terrarium appropriate, so be sure to check the descriptions before making a selection! We do our best to grow every plant we can in-house, and that's the case with the majority of species on this page. A few which are too big for us to grow in-house are fastidiously hand-picked in person by our staff from a local family owned nursery we've been working with since we opened for business. We take our responsibility to provide the absolute highest quality plants seriously, and we're confident that you'll love the plants you receive!

Potted Plants:

Best Terrarium Plants For The Price Bare Rooted & Wrapped With ID
Plant nurseries roughly categorize their plants by pot size, and a plant is made available once it has mostly filled out it's container. Generally speaking, a 4in potted plant is roughly twice the size of a 3in pot, and a 3in potted plant is typically twice the size of a 2in pot. Needless to say, we do our best to offer big & healthy plants which were categorized honestly, and are representative of the photos we've got listed on the site. Every potted plant we sell is shipped bare root, and the root ball of the plant is carefully wrapped in paper towels before it's placed back into it's cleaned pot for shipping. From there, it's wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Live Mats:

Healthy Background Plants For Terrariums How We Ship Live Mat Terrarium Plants
We're proud to offer a brand new way to order plants, and we're loving the results so far. Our Live Mats are grown with plenty of light & the ideal amount of moisture required to form a dense mat. Before shipping, each section is gently separated from it's sealed container, rinsed free of excess potting soil, and carefully placed in a partially inflated airtight bag. Depending on the specific plant, live mats can planted terrestrially or attached to a background to grow epiphytically. These are exceptionally dense portions of plants, so a little can go a long way!

Rooted Portions:

How We Ship Rooted Portions Of Terrarium Plants
Some plants we grow are offered in rooted portions, which are slightly smaller portions than would typically be included in a 3in pot. The length and overall portion size depends on the species being offered, but these do include a portion of the root system for easy planting & fast acclimation. When it comes time to ship, we'll carefully separate the portion from it's mother plant, rinse the roots free of potting soil, and carefully wrap the roots in a ball of moist paper towels. From there, the plant is wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Clippings:

How We Ship Clippings For Terrarium Plants
Clippings are the smallest size portion of what we offer. Depending on the species, clippings may or may not include small attached roots. Plants we sell as clippings are typically epiphytic in nature, meaning they'll grow without soil on the surface of another plant (or wood decor, backgrounds, etc). The difficulty in planting clippings depends entirely on the species, so don't hesitate to ask before ordering if you are curious. When it comes time to ship, we carefully clean, wrap, and seal our clippings in partially filled bags to ensure the safest transit possible. Like everything else we sell, these are individually labeled with ID.

▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This Aroid is small in stature but bold in color. With dark leaves and bright venation, these humidity-loving plants usually stay around 12-14in tall and are an easy choice for terrariums. When keeping this plant out of a terrarium, it's critical to keep humidity at 60% or higher, in an effort to maintain a healthy plant. Using an Aroid soil mix is key out of a terrarium, while using any of our aggregate-heavy vivarium substrate mixes works best for terrarium use.

Calathea lancifolia

Rattlesnake Calathea

Calathea lancifolia Calathea lancifolia
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This species is a relative of the more common prayer plant (maranta), and is native to tropical Brazil. The boldly patterned & rippled leaves are bright green & dark green on top, and a shade of purple/pink on the undersides. As a houseplant, these do great grown in any decorative pot, and prefer partial shade & moist soil. Over time, we've had these slowly grow to fill 8in pots with awesome visual impact. In a terrarium, these larger plants are typically only recommended for taller enclosures, although they are fairly easy to trim-down when necessary. If allowed to, these can grow up to 24-30in tall, although we usually ship them at only 6-12in. The leaves are not strong enough to support larger species (Crested/Gargoyle) climbing on them, but the plants will withstand being housed with similarly sized animals. This plant is also a great match for dart frogs, tree frogs, and micro geckos. The plant pictured is growing in a 3in pot.

Ficus benjamina

Weeping Fig

Ficus benjamina Weeping Fig
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Weeping Fig trees are a popular houseplant which has become a favorite among Chameleon enthusiasts for it's large, strong branches. For terrarium applications, we'd expect to plan for the tree to grow slowly. Once it outgrows the enclosure, it can always be rinsed off & used as a houseplant, or even as an out-of-terrarium perch area if your animal(s) are well behaved and supervised! We ship these anywhere from 14-18in+ tall. Some may be considerably taller. The pictured plant is growing in a 6in pot. Plants we ship may be in either 4 or 6in pots, depending what we've got on hand.

▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This is a tough woody stemmed plant which produces (inedible) fruit. While it can get pretty big, it grows very slowly and is easy to prune-to-fit. It's an awesome choice for larger enclosures, especially those which will house arboreal species. As a houseplant, this one is an especially forgiving species to work with and does best in a quick draining soil which is allowed to dry slightly between watering. In a terrarium it'll tolerate more humid conditions, so long as the substrate is well aerated. Lighting requirements are forgiving in either setting, as this plant seems to thrive in both full shade and direct sun.

Hypoestes phyllostachya

Polka Dot Plant

Polka Dot Plant
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Native to tropical Madagascar, this works as both a ground cover and/or a trailing plant. A great choice for vivariums, and is very easy to grow. We grow the red, white, and pink cultivars of this plant in limited volume. This plant can handle larger inhabitants walking on it without doing much damage, and is also delicate enough for use with smaller species. While it can grow to a fairly large size, it's very easy to trim in an enclosed setting. Grows great in a variety of conditions.

Maranta leuconeura

Prayer Plant

Prayer Plant Maranta
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
An attractive flowering plant with bold patterning on it's leaves. Great for use as a houseplant, or in larger terrariums. This plant can be deceptively fragile, and it's not a great choice for being kept in enclosures housing especially large inhabitants. Maranta's leaves point upwards like praying hands, earning it's name the "prayer plant"! For now, only Maranta leuconeura 'Erythroneura' is ready to sell, but we'll have some of the 'Massangeana' cultivar growing out soon. For now, only Maranta leuconeura 'Massangeana' is ready to sell, but we'll have some of the 'Erythroneura' cultivar growing out soon. Both the 'Erythroneura' (red) and 'Massangeana' (green) cultivars are available now. Philodendron ornatum

Velvet Leaf Philodendron

Philodendron ornatum
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This rare & slower-growing species of Philodendron has been growing in our shop for years, and isn't something we're able to offer often. It is native to tropical Brazil and has high humidity requirements, so it's not recommended for use as a houseplant. It's immature form is ideal for terrariums, and produces bluish-green uniquely patterned shiny leaves along it's long trailing stems. It's mature form with larger & wider leaves is unlikely to happen in a smaller terrarium, but photos of this plant in-situ look spectacular. In our grow room, the mother plant of the individuals available here has reached over 14ft long, and climbed two levels of grow racks. Our experience points towards this species having a fairly wide tolerance of lighting conditions. This species can technically be planted up high & allowed to trail, but we think it looks best as a climber (planted low).

Platycerium sp.

Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A very unique epiphytic tropical plant that's native to many locations throughout the world. These are most commonly kept as a curious looking houseplant, and we're fairly certain these are actually Platycerium bifurcatum. Although sold at around 8-12" wide, these can slowly grow to be very large, and aren't well suited for most small & medium sized enclosures. If planted in an enclosure, we suggest mounting it in sphagnum moss to a cork flat or tree fern piece for long-term success. Wikipediaext link also has a bunch of info on Platycerium, and it's worth reading if you are considering grabbing one. While we do our best to grow every plant we can in-house, this species is very slow to grow and ours are typically sourced from a specialty greenhouse we've been working with for years. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Rhaphidophora cryptantha

Shingle Plant

Rhaphidophora cryptantha Rhaphidophora cryptantha Terrarium Plant For Sale
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Rhaphidophora cryptantha is a rare shingling plant which eagerly grows up & onto moist vertical surfaces. It's leaves conform to the growth surface, and only grow to full size (1.5-3in) once the plant has successfully gripped to something. Each leaf has a silver metallic vein structure which looks awesome in person. This is one of the slower growing plants we work with, with every available specimen being at least 3 months old since propagation. While we grow them in soil at the shop, they'll also do especially well when grown epiphytically in a terrarium environment. This species is not recommended for beginners, or for use in vivariums containing a medium (or larger) sized animal. Availability varies, and may include 6in unrooted clippings, unmounted 3in pots, and 3in pots with an animal-safe wood mount. If transferring a mounted plant, please be extra careful to not damage any of the plant's gripping roots in the process for best results.

Rhipsalis ewaldiana

Mistletoe Cactus

Rhipsalis ewaldiana
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This slow growing tropical cactus is actually an epiphyte! Over time it's unusually shaped stems grow in a pendulous habit, spreading as it trails downward. It features little white hairs which sprout along it's length, with none of the typical sharp spines associated with some species of cacti. As a houseplant, we recommend planting this species in extremely fast draining mildly acidic soil, and keeping it in a partially to full shaded area. That being said, we've kept it in fairly bright conditions in our grow rooms and have seen parts of the plant turn red/bronze for an attractive visual effect. (Use your best judgment!) It's soil should be watered regularly, but must not be kept especially wet. In a vivarium environment, this ultra-slow growing plant should be mounted to a background & allowed to trail downward for best results. Higher levels of humidity and relatively frequent misting sessions are well tolerated, and will be necessary for those looking to mount it epiphytically. Lower humidity is also acceptable so long as the plant's roots are kept in an appropriate vivarium substrate. Brighter light is better tolerated along with higher levels of humidity from what we've seen. The plant shown is growing in a 3in pot, and hasn't yet begun to arc downward.

Saintpaulia ionantha

African Violet

African Violet
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A very common & easy to care for houseplant! The colors of the flowers can vary quite a bit, but we generally only stock the purple cultivar which seems to be most popular type today. Avoid hitting the flowers directly with cold water, as it can cause spotting. Soil should allow for some aeration & draining, and the plant will do best under medium to low light conditions. We try to ship these before they flower, to prevent damage during shipping. Perfect for use has a houseplant, in dish gardens, fairy gardens, and more. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Ficus deltoidea

Mistletoe Fig

Ficus deltoidea For Terrariums, Mistletoe Fig Bioactive Terrarium Plant

A very common & easy to care for houseplant! The colors of the flowers can vary quite a bit, but we generally only stock the purple cultivar which seems to be most popular type today.
