Darkwater Extract

Indian Almond Leaf Blackwater Extract By Fritz

Dark Water Extract Black Water Extract For Tadpoles
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
Manufacturer Description:
Fritz Dark Water Almond Leaf Extract is a natural water conditioner containing concentrated tannis from Indian Almond Leaves. These tannins will create a more natural environment for Bettas, shrimp and other fish. Almond leaves contain humic acids and tannins which are known to have antibacterial properties, naturally lower pH and create blackwater conditions in the aquarium. Fritz Dark Water Almond Leaf Extract is suitable for all soft-water fish including betta, discus, tetras, angelfish, and killifish. To create blackwater at 1ppm tannin, add 1tsp (5ml) per one US Gallon, or 6 drops per cup (236mL).

Film Canisters (Frog Hides)

The perfect size for dart frog egg deposition sites

Film Canisters For Amphibian Hides And Tadpoles
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
Film canisters are commonly used as egg deposition sites when breeding dart frogs, but they also have countless other uses. We've seen members of the Dendrobates, Oophaga, and Ranitomeya genera use these successfully. Larger Dendrobates & Phyllobates frogs may be more comfortable using a coconut hut with a petri dish. All of our film canisters are brand new, and are available with or without closing tops.

Film Canisters w/Suction Cups

Glass-mounted egg & tadpole deposition sites

Sucution Cupped Film Canister For Dart Frog Breeding
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
In nature, certain species of dart frog would use the water-filled axil of a Bromeliad (or similar) to deposit it's eggs/tadpoles. These suction cupped film canisters can be used as a supplemental egg deposition site for many different arboreal dart frog species. Even with plenty of Neoregelias to choose from, some frogs seem to prefer to lay eggs directly in these little things. Egg/tadpole removal is extremely easy with film canisters too! Available in both black & clear. (Some frogs choose favorites!) :-) Lids are not included.

Indian Almond Leaves

Releases beneficial tannins when submerged for "Tadpole Tea"!

Indian Almond Leaves For Tadpoles
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
High quality 8-10" Indian Almond Leaves perfect for creating tadpole tea. All quantities are now sold in air-tight sealed bags to ensure leaves arrive both fresh & undamaged from shipping. There are a few ways to use Indian Almond Leaves in our hobby, and we'll skim through some below.
Boiled Extract Method: To quickly & efficiently create blackwater extract, simply boil a few leaves in a small pot of water for 10-15 minutes and allow to cool. The process will extract many of the tannins within the leaves, and create a dark colored blackwater concentrate. The concentrate can be used a number of different ways, ranging from aquariums, to paludariums, and even tadpole cups. (Just a couple drops, in tadpole cups!) Unused extract can be refrigerated for a short time, for future use.
Passive Blackwater Method: This method is great for hobbyists who won't be using a whole lot of Blackwater at one time. Indian Almond Leaves will leech tannins even without boiling them, although boiling speeds things up drastically. Leaves can be added directly to aquariums, paludariums, and tadpole cups if there's no rush to get things going quickly. At NEHERP, we use a roughly 2in square in each 16oz tadpole container, and have been using this method successfully for years. We prefer it, since dry leaves store easier than prepared/boiled blackwater concentrate.

Methylene Blue

An anti-fungal treatment for aquatics

Methylene Blue Anti Fungal Treatment For Tadpoles
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Methylene Blue is the most commonly used anti-fungal/anti-disease liquid for raising certain species of frog tadpoles. Suggested dilution in the hobby is 1-2 drops per gallon of solution. Once the solution is prepared, we add just a splash (around a soda cap full) of diluted solution to each 16oz tadpole rearing container as an added precaution against possible infections. Please note: This is a super-concentrated product, and two drops of concentrate are used to make a gallon of solution. Always do your research before using this type of product, and be quick to contact a vet for help when any animal's health is in question.
Manufacturer Description
Methylene Blue is effective against superficial fungal infections of fishes. The drug may be used as an alternative to Malachite Green for the control of fungus when it is known that the fish to be treated are sensitive. Methylene Blue is safe for use with fish eggs and fry for the prevention of fungal infections. As a secondary use, it is effective against some external protozoans, such as Ichthyophthirius (Ich), Chilodonella and Costia. Treats fungal infections.

Petri Dishes

Useful when breeding various Amphibian species

Petri Dish For Dart Frog Tadpoles
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Although these have many uses in a herp enthusiast's supply collection, they are most commonly used in amphibian husbandry when collection or storage of eggs is necessary. Many dart frog breeders place the lower halves of petri dishes beneath Coconut Huts, as a larger egg deposition & breeding site. Once the eggs are deposited, they can easily be removed for out-of-enclosure care. Learn more about how frog breeders use these on our Tinctorius Dart Frog care page! NEHERP Staff Description:
We've discontinued most of our other Tadpole foods in favor of Repashy's awesome performing Soilent Green. It's ingredients listext. link is ridiculously good by comparison to the pellet & flake varieties, too. A little goes a long way with Repashy products, with every three ounces of powder making 1.25 pounds of gel diet! To make a batch, we mix a 3:1 ratio of water:powder, and microwave it. Once it's boiling we pull it out, let it cool, and refrigerate it until needed. Finished gel will keep for up to 2 weeks in the fridge, or up to 6 months in the freezer.

Tadpole Moss

Ready-to-use moss for tadpole development containers

Live Moss For Tadpole Containers
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Our tadpole moss has been specifically processed for tadpole rearing containers, and rinsed heavily to ensure it won't cloud water. We've found it to be an exceptional moss to be used in tadpole rearing; especially in conditions with enough light to support some growth! Each zipper-closed moss bag can be sorted into 20+ tad containers. Click here for an idea of how much we use in each 16oz tadpole container. (Indian Almond Leaf & spirulina algae also shown in photo) Store moist in a cool place, or stretched-out in a misted resealable bag under grow lights. (This is live moss!) In many cases, the moss can be replanted into the froglet's grow-out terrariums once they are ready for life on land. This will do well for a month or two in water before being tossed or transferred to land, but is not recommended for long-term use as an aquatic plant. For that purpose, we'd recommend something like Riccia fluitans.

Tetra Freeze Dried Bloodworms

A great supplemental food item for tadpoles aquatic species

Tetra Bloodworms
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
A great occasional treat for use in conjunction with the Repashy Soilent Green diet we rely on for the primary diet of our aquatic frogs & tadpoles. All natural freeze dried bloodworms are a fair source of protein, and a handful of different aquatic amphibian species will accept bloodworms as a snack. Another common use is as a supplemental food item for tadpoles of many species. We raise our tadpoles individually, and offer one worm weekly to larger tadpoles. Be sure the tadpole(s) fully consume the first before introducing more, since too many at once may foul the water.
