Bugs: Feeders & Microfauna

About Our Cultures

We've been working with & offering our vivarium microfauna & feeders since 2009, and we're proud of our earned reputation. Our fruit fly cultures helped put us on the map, with our fast producing & well proven NEHERP media. We keep all of our fly cultures in a specially built temperature & humidity controlled room, to ensure every single one of our cultures remain of the absolute top-quality. For vivarium microfauna, we carry & breed both Springtails & Isopods in-house, which are the two most common & important "clean up crew" species used in the hobby. We also carry authentic Phoenix Worms brand Black Soldier Fly larvae, which are one of the most nutritious diets for an insectivorous Reptile, Amphibian, or Invertebrate. Check back often... We're working on some new feeders for mid- 2016!

NEHERP 32oz Fruit Fly Cultures

Some of the highest quality fruit fly cultures online!

NEHERP Fruit Fly Feeder Cultures
We have super high quality fruit fly cultures available at our lowest prices ever. Either of these are an excellent food source for dart frogs and many other small amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. D. melanogaster is our smallest fly that produces quickly and in large numbers. Turkish Glider flies are newer to NEHERP, and reproduce just as fast & in as many numbers as D. melanogaster, but are slightly larger & have the ability to hop & glide in an enclosure. D. hydei flies are larger and produce slower & in smaller numbers. Golden hydei is our largest fly, and produces about the same (if night slightly faster) than typical D. hydei. Cultures for each species are created using our best-selling & well proven NEHERP Fly Media to ensure excellent results. For newer hobbyists, we suggest starting with the more forgiving D. melanogaster or Turkish Glider species.
If you'd like to try your hand at breeding your own, we offer everything you need to make your own high quality fruit fly cultures on our Insect Breeding Supplies page!

Giant Orange - Fast Reproduction Speed - Average Adult Size Roughly 3/8"-1/2"
Giant Gray - Slower Reproduction Speed - Average Adult Size Roughly 3/8"-5/8"
Like our Springtails & Fruit Fly cultures, these are bred in-house at NEHERP, so you can rest comfortably knowing they are 100% CB and fed only high quality foods. Isopods do a great job keeping vivariums clean & tidy! They are small, harmless creatures, with a maximum length of about 3/4". Each one of our starter cultures can either be added directly to a vivarium, or they can be introduced into a breeding kit (optional) which should begin to produce within a couple weeks. These are shipped in small deli cups for the safest travel possible. To maximize value, we don't count babies towards our total count, as they can take weeks to hit mature breeding size. We always do our best to ensure 17-20+ juveniles & adults will be included, to ensure a fast growing population for you!
Care Info:
We mist our isopods every 2 days, and feed about twice per week or when the food disappears. We offer each 6qt culture about 1/2-1 tbsp Repashy Bug Burger every feeding, and keep them @ room temp (73F-78F). Isopods love Bug Burger (Pic: Isopods munchin') Our isopod substrate is a modified ABG Mix, with added crushed leaf litter, and cypress mulch. We also add a handful of crushed leaf litter (live oak) every other month or so to give them an alternative food source.

Phoenix Worms

An excellent, highly nutritious feeder insect for a variety of different species

Phoenix Worms
Recommended by veterinarians, genuine Phoenix Worms are the only calcium-rich feeder that has naturally balanced calcium and phosphorus and can be safely fed as a staple. Delicious, nutritious, high in calcium and low in fat, Phoenix worms are an excellent alternative to more common feeders for dozens of different species. In addition to having a perfect balance of calcium and phosphorus, Phoenix Worms provide high levels of natural lauric acid. Lauric acid is known for its excellent antimicrobial properties including potent activity against lipid coated viruses, clostridium and pathogenic protozoa including coccidia. About 53% of the fat in Phoenix Worms is beneficial lauric acid, a proven antimicrobial especially effective against coccidiosis. NEHERP 16oz Springtail Cultures

Quality freshly started Springtail cultures

Springtails Close Up Springtail Culture
Springtails above shown greatly enlarged. Actual adult size, if viewed at 100%: Springtail Actual Size
Springtails are a critical part of the detritivore cleanup crew of a vivarium and can be used as a feeder insect for smaller species. This species (Folsomia candida) is the fastest to reproduce in the hobby, and does an excellent job keeping things clean in a vivarium. One freshly started culture contains enough springtails to seed most larger sized enclosures, or several smaller ones. Our best selling mixed media cultures offer an easy way to introduce springtails directly into your vivarium by simply dumping the culture's contents directly onto your substrate layer (ideally just after adding plants but before adding leaf litter/moss). Once added, the springs will populate the habitat and should sustain a healthy population indefinitely. Each culture is available with a small deli cup of brewers yeast (springtail food) at no additional charge. As always, our cultures are absolutely guaranteed to be free of mites and other microfauna.
