Heat Resistant Aluminum Duct Tape

Heat resistant reflective tape with tons of uses

Aluminum Duct Tape
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Essentially the same heat resistant aluminum heat tape sold at hardware stores, only at half the price! In our hobby we use these most often for holding heat tape, heat cables, and heat pads in place. It's also useful for lining light fixtures to increase reflectivity. This is the same tape we've used to line our grow rooms with reflective coating material too, and it's held up very well over the course of the years. We've even heard a rumor about some people using it to fixing ductwork. :-) High quality & thick 2 mil material, on a 30' roll.

Extension Cords

Heavy duty cables for jobs up to 1800W!

HD Extension Cord
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
These heavy duty extension cords are great for tackling heavy workload tasks around your hobby or work room. The cord material is sturdy & built to stand up to all sorts of environments. Each cord is grounded and has a 3-outlet opening on the end. Made from thick 14 gauge wiring and rated for up to 1800W (15A), these would be comparable to "Utility/Contractor" cords rather than the more common 16/18 gauge household cords. Our prices are usually lower than most hardware stores for an equal gauge, equal length product. Labeled for indoor use only.

Lamp Stand

Fully adjustable metal stand for dome & wire fixtures

Light Stand For Terrarium Heat Lamps Stand For Grow Lights
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
This lamp stand features adjustable height, adjustable length, bendable wire-holding clips, and an all-metal construction. We've used these stands over terrariums, small-scale plant propagation projects, and on tabletop displays. They are great for suspending specialty lamps (UVB / LED Grow / Etc) over a desired surface, and the sturdy metal base holds everything tightly. The stand is adjustable in two directions from 20-38in tall, and 8-15in deep. Everything locks in place with metal-on-metal screws for a secure hold. We tried a couple of other types of stand (adhesives, plastics, and smaller bases), but this relatively old-school option remains our top choice.

Light Hanging Hardware

An inexpensive way to hang lights & more

Light Hanging Chain Kit
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
A simple kit for hanging light fixtures and more quickly & easily. Each kit includes two 6ft chains, 4 S-Hooks, and two self tapping (screw-tip) hooks. We've got a ton of these kits being used in our grow rooms, suspending hundreds of different lights. The chain links can be easily bent and re-closed using a pair of pliers, if you need to make adjustments to the chain lengths. The S-Hooks make height adjustment easier, since they can attach to the chain anywhere along it's length. If you'll be installing these on a ceiling without exposed/visible beams, always be sure to screw the J hooks directly into a wood beam/joist to ensure a safe installation. Light Meter: PAR (µMol/M²S PPFD)

A tool for measuring PAR / PPFD in µMol/M²S

Light Meter For Terrariums (PAR)
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
A great entry level tool to meter the level of photosynthetically active radiation incident on a surface. (How much "plant usable light" is available) We recommend them for hobbyists looking to get a realistic idea of how an untested light source is actually performing. The probe sensor allows for taking PAR / PPFD measurements in or out of an enclosure. These PAR meters are some of the best sub-$200 units on the market, and they are a great tool for hobbyists looking to test their lighting. We used this meter a whole lot prior to 2016 before we made the investment & switched over to Apogee & Sekonic units for our product testing. ($400-$1000+) Even so, these inexpensive units are extremely handy and we enjoyed using them for years. Like the digital Lux meter, we recommend not pulling/stretching the wire at the base of the unit for best results. Unlike the lux meter, this one has a rechargeable battery (via USB).
Manufacturer Description:
Measures PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) flux in wavelengths ranging from the 400 to 700 nm. Fully portable handheld PAR meter with a highly accurate, integrated Quantum Sensor. Measures up to 10,000 μmol, and has a data logging capability using standard mini-USB cable and proprietary data logging software. The meter's built-in low battery indicator means you'll never be caught by surprise by a low-power product.

Manufacturer Description:
All new for 2020, the Advanced Quantum PAR Meter provides accurate and cost-effective measurement for all light sources used to grow plants. The PHOTOBIO by Phantom Quantum PAR meter is designed to measure PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) flux in wavelengths ranging from 400 to 700nm. There is a proportional relationship between the number of photons absorbed in 400 to 700nm band and the rate of photosynthesis in plants, which is important for horticultural studies and monitoring plant physiology. The Advanced light meter comes complete with a remote sensor, two connection cables, the main unit and easy to replace AAA batteries. The PAR meter can store up to 99 measurements for easy reference.

Light Meter: Apogee PAR (µMol/M²S PPFD)

The higher-end light meter we rely on for commercial testing

The best PAR meter ever
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Recommendation:
Apogee's MQ-500 PAR meter is considered industry standard. Their newer sensor is famous for it's broad relative response, which allows it to accurately and flatly meter a wide spectral range of 389nm-692nm. Some LED fixtures are notoriously difficult to gauge accurately, but this Apogee tool makes it easy. Just be sure to pick up the one with the newer (blue as of 9/20) sensor. While other meters are super useful and significantly cheaper for personal use, the Apogee model will allow for confident comparisons to any data posted online.

Light Meter: Lumens (FC / Lux)

A tool for measuring illuminance

Light Meter For Terrariums (Lux)
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
A great entry level tool to meter the visual brightness of specific lighting applications. We recommend them for hobbyists looking to get a realistic idea of how an untested light source is actually performing. The probe sensor allows for taking Lux measurements in or out of an enclosure. Ours has been running for 6+ years without issue, but we strongly recommend being gentle with this unit for best results. Over the past 5+ years of selling these, the only occasional issue relates to pulling/stretching of the wires away from the base unit, which can crack solder points. Go easy, and it should last at least as long as ours has! The easy to replace battery tends to last for about two years or so or intermittent use. We haven't found a better Lux meter in this price range!
Manufacturer Description:
This product is a precision instrument used to measure illuminance (displays either footcandles or lumens). The meter is fully cosine corrected for the angular incidence of light, meaning that if you are not holding the sensor perfectly perpendicular to the light source, the sensor will still read the light correctly. The sensor is stable and made of a long-life silicon photo diode. The digital light meter accurately measures to 40,000 FC (430,400 lumens). The meter's built-in low battery indicator means you'll never be caught by surprise by a low-power product. Capable of measuring artificial or natural light. 3 measurement scales for easy & precise readings. Includes lifetime silicon cell (Lithium 3V CR2032) battery.

NEHERP Staff Description:
Every grow area will benefit from some reflective material. We recommend lining every "open" space surrounding a grow area with reflective liner, to increase the amount of available light to the plants. The folded sections of reflective material are about 7.25ft x 4.5ft once unfolded. At only around $0.106 per square foot, these are a great bang for the buck. We recommend taping the top & sides only, leaving the bottom open to help prevent condensation build-up. Our reflective aluminum tape is perfect for hanging/mounting reflective material.

Timer - Dual Outlet Digital Minute Timer

A budget-focused timer featuring minute (not second) control

▾ Show Information & Link ▾
NEHERP Staff Recommendation:
If you don't need down-to-the-second control, and aren't worried as much about brand names, a generic digital outlet timer could save you a few bucks. These digital timers offer 8 user-selected on/off cycles per day, with each day's schedule individually programmable with minimum of 1-minute intervals. We discovered this brand in particular when searching for remote outlet timers, and ended up using a few of their minute timers at our shop when our primary distributor was sold out during the pandemic. To put it simply, these timers work great for basic lighting controllers. :-)
