▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This moss is by far one of our best sellers, and is one of the products which helped establish our company. Our live moss is 100% all natural, never dried, and pesticide & dye free. It'll grow upward and outward in well lit vivariums with high humidity. Our moss is is sold pre-processed in resealable bags, and is safe for immediate use in vivariums. Can be mounted epiphytically or terrestrially, depending on the goals for your application. This species is perfectly suited to vivarium conditions. Since 2009, we're the only terrarium plant supplier that pre-processes moss for you! Our moss thrives on either NEHERP or ABG substrate, and can tolerate a wide variety of lighting conditions ranging from partial shade to full sun. Please note that the moss pictured above had about 2-3 months to acclimate, and will require time to grow & become that lush. Please check out our moss caresheet for advice on how to grow it successfully.

NEHERP Live Moss Slurry

A live moss mix slurry made from NEHERP’s custom blend of different species

NEHERP Live Moss Slurry Packaging NEHERP Live Moss Slurry Growing On Cork Bark NEHERP Live Moss Slurry Growing Epiphytically NEHERP Live Moss Slurry Growing On Ghostwood
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Our live moss slurry is a concentrated blend of different moss & plant species that can be used to initiate growth on different terrarium decor. Our mix will acclimate quickly in most temperate, subtropical, and tropical vivaria when relative humidity averages 75% or higher. It can be successfully planted in crevices in wood/rocks/backgrounds, on tree fern panels, or simply spread lightly over leaf litter or substrate for a slightly grown-in forest floor look as it acclimates. Since our Moss Slurry is prepared using live moss & plants, acclimation will begin to visually occur within just 3-4 weeks in most cases. Once acclimated, the growth will spread to nearby backgrounds, wood decor, and rocks. Depending on the amount of light available to the mix, different species will out-grow others to ensure at least some nice looking growth even in fairly dim areas of an enclosure. (Click for example of low-light growth) For fastest & most aggressive growth, please use our inexpensive LED Vivarium Lighting Kits. Our mix is made fresh every week, and should be used within a day or two of receipt for best results. Click for detailed instructions.

Pillow Moss

Leucobryum Sp.

Tropical Pillow Moss For Terrariums & Vivariums
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This pillow moss is low-growing, slow-growing, and shipped moist in resealable bags. These are sourced dry, and are rehydrated & kept under high-PAR grow lights in order to encourage swift reanimation. This species is one of our slowest growers, and it's size is easily manageable in any enclosure. Despite it's moderate difficulty level and somewhat unforgiving nature, Pillow Moss is one of the more commonly used varieties in the hobby. Under adequate lighting & with plenty of humidity, this species seems to perform well on either NEHERP or ABG substrate. (Any of our LED Lighting Kits will do!) For best results, don't allow this moss to dry out or remain completely saturated for extended periods of time.

Hemianthus callitrichoides

Dwarf Baby Tears / Syn. Micranthemum umbrosum

Riccia Moss For Bioactive Terrariums Low Growing Live Terrarium Moss
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This species isn't a true moss, but it's growth pattern makes it an ideal choice for a moss-like ground cover in humid terrariums. Hemianthus callitrichoides has some of the smallest leaves of any plant commonly grown in a terrarium environment, and forms a solid low-growing carpet after a few months of acclimation. Dwarf Baby Tears requires high levels of humidity to thrive in a terrarium, and does best with frequent misting. It's an ideal species for areas surrounding water features, too! Not recommended for use in less humid environments, or in enclosures which don't use automated misting. Dividing this plant into very small portions & allowing it to spread outward will be the fastest way to create a carpeted look.

Description for Terrariums / Vivariums
This species isn't a true moss, but it's growth pattern makes it an ideal choice for a moss-like ground cover in humid terrariums. This species has some of the smallest leaves of any plant commonly grown in a terrarium environment. Since the leaves are so small, this species will form what looks like a green carpet when conditions are right. Dwarf Baby Tears requires high levels of humidity to thrive in a terrarium, and does best with frequent misting. Any of our NEHERP Vivarium Lighting Kits will provide plenty of light. Not recommended for use in less humid environments, or in enclosures which don't use automated misting. Dividing this plant into very small portions & allowing it to spread outward will be the fastest way to create a carpeted look.
Grower Description:
Description for Aquariums
Hemianthus callitrichoides is one of the smallest aquarium plants in the world, and creeps over the bottom with millimetre-sized, round leaves. Hemianthus callitrichoides is an attractive and popular foreground plant for small aquariums. It is not a difficult plant, but it requires good conditions such as enough light, added CO2, water circulation and fertilizer to thrive. If these conditions are hard to create, you may use Micranthemum ‘Monte-Carlo’ as an alternative, as it is less demanding. Small pearls or bubbles of oxygen are often produced on top of the plants, adding a very lively aspect to the carpet. If planted in small clumps a few centimetres apart, it will spread rapidly and cover the bottom like a carpet. Trim the carpet regularly, otherwise the lower parts will not get enough light causing root death. Found on Cuba, west of Havana.

General Description:

NEHERP Staff Description:
Description for Terrariums / Vivariums
This is probably one of the most sought-after "moss-like" species in the vivarium hobby, and is one of Mike's (the owner of NEHERP) favorite plants for ground cover. (The photos above don't do Riccia justice!) It will grow directly on our vivarium substrates, but requires high humidity and/or fairly frequent misting to thrive. We also recommend one of our enclosure-specific recommended LED lighting solutions if you'd like to give this plant a shot. We've also seen Riccia thrive when planted on Cork, Ghostwood, and Custom Backgrounds, so long as everything is humid & misted frequently enough. Recommended only for use with very small inhabitants, since anything much larger than a dart frog will fairly easily knock-off and/or damage this plant. Also grows well aquatically either floating on the surface, or when pinned down beneath the water.
Grower Description:
Description for Aquariums
Japanese Takashi Amano has inspired many aquarium owners to keep the 1-5 cm tall cosmopolitic liverwort, Riccia fluitans, submerged. It can be kept down by tying it to a stone with a piece of Floral Mounting Line, but new shoots always grow towards the surface, so it may be necessary to prune it with scissors. Riccia fluitans thrives best with added CO2 and in good growing conditions small oxygen bubbles form on the leaf tips. As a traditional floating plant it offers good protection for young fish

True Tropical Moss (Unknown Type #1)

An unknown slow-growing variety of tropical moss

Rare Low Growing Tropical Terrarium Moss Best Low Growing Live Tropical Moss For Terrariums
Texture shown greatly enlarged. Amount visible in frame is roughly the size of a quarter.
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Every 3-4 inches of available Moss represents upwards of 6 months worth of growth. This incredibly slow growing moss is beautiful, rewarding, and is likely to be available extremely infrequently. Despite having plenty of growth space dedicated to just this species, we can only make a tiny amount available at any one time, since it grows so slowly. We originally acquired this Moss in 2013, in a shipment of Bromeliads shipped to us from Florida. (Likely originally a South American variety!) In our experience, this moss prefers extremely high humidity (70-99% R/H), medium levels of lighting (around 30-75µMol/M²S at the growth surface), and does not tolerate being especially wet or dry. At NEHERP, we grow it in total isolation on sterilized, peat-rich, mildly acidic potting soil with balanced & mild levels of nutrients. A great choice for plant-only terrariums and amphibian vivariums. Not recommended for beginner keepers, but highly recommended for those looking for a very rewarding-but-challenging type of Moss.

These are sourced dry, and are rehydrated & kept under high-PAR grow lights in order to encourage swift reanimation before shipping. This species is one of our slowest growers, and it's size is easily manageable in any enclosure. Despite it's moderate difficulty level, we consider it one of the more used varieties in the hobby. Does well on either NEHERP or ABG substrate, and requires fairly high levels of PAR light to thrive. (Any of our LED Lighting Kits will do!) For best results, don't allow this moss to dry out or remain over-saturated for extended periods of time.

Riccia fluitans

Riccia Moss / Floating Crystalwort

Riccia Moss For Bioactive Terrariums Low Growing Live Terrarium Moss
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This is probably one of the most sought-after "moss-like" species in the vivarium hobby, and is one of Mike's (the owner of NEHERP) favorite plants for ground cover. It will grow directly on our vivarium substrates, but requires high humidity and/or fairly frequent misting to thrive. We've also seen Riccia thrive when planted on Cork, Ghostwood, and Custom Backgrounds, so long as everything is humid & misted frequently enough. Recommended for plant-only terrariums, or vivariums with very small inhabitants, since anything much larger than a dart frog may damage this plant. Also grows well aquatically either floating on the surface, or when pinned down beneath the water. This Riccia is carefully propagated and cell-grown at NEHERP for an absolute top-quality plant.
