New England Herpetoculture Fruit Fly
Media
Our best Melanogaster Media

As of January 2011, we're making our
simple-to-mix high yield fruit fly media
available to our customers. We've found it to produce just as well as
other commercially available media (often better!) while keeping a nice
sweet smell for as long as possible.
A fruit fly care sheet goes along with each bag sold that includes complete
instructions on how to build your own cultures.
Cultures using our newly re-tweaked NEHERP media last between 3-7 weeks on
average depending on temperature, species, and amount of flies added.
In our
recent testing of 4 popular types of fly media, our NEHERP Media proved to
be the best media available in terms of production yield for Melanogaster
flies. (Yes, it works well with Hydei, too!) You won't be disappointed!

Repashy
Superfly Media
Our best Hydei Media

New to the market - This Premium Mixture is fortified with Minerals,
Trace Elements, Vitamins, and Carotenoids in order to maximize the
nutritional value of Fruit Flies as they are fed to prey. Suitable for both
Drosophila Melanogaster and Drosophila Hydei. We've found adding a few
sprinkles of active yeast on top of the media after it's been mixed slightly
increases the yield & life of the culture. Some people use it, some
don't. (It's free, either way.) In our recent testing of 4
popular types of fly media, Repashy's Superfly proved to be the best media
in terms of longevity for D. Hydei flies. A very important tool for fruit fly breeding, giving the flies much more
surface area to climb on.
(Hey, at least we're honest! Allen's Superfly media is KING of
Hydei production as far as we're concerned!)

Mite Spray - Quick Menu

Mites are an extremely common occurrence when breeding fruit flies,
usually caused by keeping cultures for too long.
(We suggest discarding all cultures after one month!)
To help reduce the risk of mites infecting your cultures use any of
the available mite sprays on surfaces, the outsides of the cultures, and
spray some on paper towels and rest your cultures on the moistened towels.
These few tips can really help with any mite problems.
For more detailed information on each type of spray - check out
our medications & chemicals section
HERE.
Note: Mites that are known to infest fruit fly cultures are
completely harmless to your pets!
They are merely an annoyance than can reduce the lifespan of a fruit fly
culture.

A quick, inexpensive, 1-click solution to get everything you need to
breed isopods. The kit includes a special substrate mix, sterilite 6qt
container, and 4oz of Repashy Bug Burger. Isopods love Bug Burger (Pic:
Isopods
munchin') - a very high quality all in one food source.
Besides Bug Burger, misting every other day is usually the only other
maintenance needed to breed these super easy, nifty little critters.

Springtail Food
We've used straight brewers yeast as springtail food for 3+
years now with great success. It's very inexpensive, straightforward,
and we've never had mite issues using it (often seen with mushrooms & fish
food). Simply sprinkle a bit on your springtail culture and mist it
with some dechlorinated water to hydrate it a bit. Once the springs
eat it, simply replace it with a little more. We usually feed our
springtail cultures about twice per week. For long term
cultures we suggest using charcoal as a substrate. This .6LB 16oz deli cup
should have more than enough to keep a larger sized culture going for at 4-6
months or more depending on the amount used.

Medium Grade Organic Charcoal

Organic medium grade charcoal is a perfect medium for springtail breeding or to be broken up into smaller bits to add into a vivarium substrate mix. We prefer medium grade over fine grade when breeding springtails because it's easy to get a bunch of springtails out by removing a big chunk of charcoal with all the springs still on it!
