Exo Terra Cricket Pen

A great storage solution & home for feeder crickets

Exo Terra Cricket Pen
The Exo Terra Cricket Pen is ideal for housing, keeping and dispensing live crickets. Crickets prefer dark spaces, and will readily crawl into the tubes which provide hiding places for them, making it easy to use the tubes as dispensing tools. The tubes remain in position when the lid is removed, allowing easy access and less chance of cricket escape. The cricket pen includes an insect feeding dish & water sponge, which is a real time & money saver! Small: 7" X 5.5" X 4.3" Large: 12" X 8" X 8.6"

Exo Terra Terrariums

Exo Terra's high quality 2-door front opening glass terrariums

Exo Terra Terrariums
The Exo Terra Glass Terrarium is the ideal reptile or amphibian housing designed by European herpetologists. The front opening doors allow easy access for maintenance and feeding. A specially designed lock will prevent escape and the doors can be opened separately. The full screen top ventilation allows UVB and infrared penetration, and is completely removable for easy access while decorating or cleaning. In the back of the screen cover are 5 closable wire or tube inlets on both sides to install heating products, waterfalls, environmental sensors, etc. inside the terrarium. The bottom plate of the terrarium is raised to mount a substrate heater to heat a part of the extended ground surface. The extra high fixed front window is ideal for thick layers of substrates, which is necessary for true live vivarium construction. The foam rock background (included) is the same color & texture as all other Exo Terra backgrounds All terrariums are shipped insured for your protection, and carry a replacement guarantee. Larger enclosures are available for pickup in our warehouse in CT, by selecting "View larger sizes" below.

If you'll be housing a tropical species, we strongly suggest using these terrariums in conjunction with our NEHERP Glass Inserts for Exo Terra enclosures to keep humidity up, & plants/animals thriving!

What's a Grow Out Enclosure? What about Plant Lighting? What about Maintenance?
The Purpose Of A Grow Out Enclosure

A grow out enclosure (often just called a "growout") is built to temporarily house an animal for one reason or another. When a hatchling makes it's first steps into the world, there can be benefits of housing it individually, rather than in a group of young'uns or with it's parents. The offspring of certain species are so tiny that they can escape through the cracks of many major brand name enclosures, and many of those enclosures are so large that the little ones would have a hard time searching for food. In situations like these, housing the little animal in his or her own growout will make a keeper's job simpler and the animal's life safer. As soon as the animal grows a little and can be housed in a more permanent home, the growout enclosure can be disassembled, cleaned, and re-purposed or simply discarded. (Hide this paragraph)

Plant Lighting For These Enclosures

There are a handful of different solutions for illuminating these enclosures. Our favorite option is Current Satellite LED+, since they are cool enough to be mounted just a couple inches away from the lids while providing excellent PAR specs at that distance. A less expensive & more powerful option is Jump Start T5HO lighting, which runs hotter & requires them to be mounted a little further from the cups. Either lighting option is available in a variety of lengths, so we'd recommend choosing the one which suits your needs best. With 2-cup-deep rows (pictured above), a 24in fixture can illuminate 10 cups, while a 48in fixture can illuminate 20-22. Moss (not included) can be added for an upgraded aesthetic effect, but it's not truly necessary or practically beneficial in these setups. The plants we include with this kit are very easy to grow, and shouldn't be a problem for even the most novice caregiver when the correct type of lighting is used. Please keep in mind that UVB light will not pass through plastic, and although there's a metal mesh lid on each cup (which allows some UVB to pass), we don't feel comfortable recommending these Grow Out Kits for any species which requires UVB light to synthesize Vitamin D3. (Hide this paragraph)

Maintaining Growout Enclosures

These are not complete live vivarium environments, so some upkeep will be necessary. Having said that, these little kits can perform fairly well if Springtails (not included) are added to help fragment the waste of the inhabitant. Some spot cleaning may be necessary for certain species, but these are still fairly low-maintenance compared to most other options. At NEHERP we mist these enclosures 2-3X daily, feed every other day, and perform spot cleaning as needed. (Hide this paragraph)

Price Comparison: Kits vs. DIY

We designed these kits to be an awesome & convenient deal for enthusiasts & breeders. Every quantity above the "single kit" purchase is discounted a bit below what you'd spend to do it yourself while purchasing the same quality stuff from us. We try to be open & upfront with our pricing, so we've added some data to give you an idea of the costs involved with building 10 or 50 kits by purchasing supplies separately. Keep in mind this doesn't factor-in stuff like bare rooting plants and cutting the wood down to size.

NEHERP Staff Description:

We've used setups like these to temporarily house a variety of different hatchling species. These are also useful for quarantining small new animal acquisitions. Each kit includes a 32oz FabriKal cup, matching Metal Mesh Lid, small piece of wood decor, substrate, and two live plants. The wood decor is typically Manzanita, hand-cut to fit into a 32oz deli cup. The included substrate is a modified V2 Vivarium Substrate intended to hold a little more moisture for this short-term purpose. Springtails and/or Isopods (not included) will still thrive in this mix, and the growout substrate can later be poured into the animal's permanent home when it's appropriate to help seed it with microfauna. The two live plants we include in every kit are well rooted (equivalent to 2in pots) growers choice varieties. Each type is selected to thrive in a wide range of conditions ranging from 55%-95% relative humidity, and will be specifically labeled with plant species & bare rooted like every other plant we sell. Occasional trimming may be necessary for longer-lived temporary homes, and the plants can also be re-used in the animal's permanent home if desired. To keep maintenance schedules uniform & predictable, we typically include just 2-3 species of plants per order. Kit quantities of 3 and greater will have grouped packaging to keep shipping simple, while maintaining individual plant IDs per package.

Exo Terra Glass Top Inserts Exo Terra Glass Top Inserts Exo Terra Glass Top Inserts
A New England Herpetoculture Product:
Note: NEHERP is not affiliated with or endorsed by Exo Terra.
Standard screen tops are often modified by enthusiasts to help increase humidity for plants & humidity loving inhabitants. These removable glass inserts drop tightly onto an existing Exo Terra screen top, and do a great job of keeping humidity significantly higher than the screen would allow. Each panel has sanded edges and a polished face to allow for safety & a maximum amount of light penetration. The misting schedule of your enclosure can be adjusted to maintain a desired humidity level of anywhere up to 99% R/H using these kits. With the panels in place, there is a roughly 1.5-1.7" strip across the enclosure's top for ventilation.
Panel Options Explained
"One Less Panel" Option Explained
What is it: The "One Less Panel" option removes one of the glass panels from the insert kit, and is available for any enclosure 12x12 and up. The smaller size panel is the one removed.

When to select this option: We'd recommend using one fewer panel than usual if the species you work with requires UVB, a top-mounted heat source, or for low (under 65%) relative humidity.

Other info: UVB can't penetrate glass, so removing one panel & placing the UVB light over the screen will allow for UVB penetration. This option was introduced on customer request! :-)

NEHERP Glass Inserts For Zoo Med Terrariums

If you are working with a species which requires UVB light or a top-mounted heat source, we recommend selecting the "Short" option. UVB Can't penetrate glass, so the shorter glass panel allows for a Terrarium Hood with a UVB bulb to be used without blocking the bulb's output. Heat bulbs & emitters shouldn't ever be placed directly over glass, so the shorter option allows for one to be positioned over the screen.

Glass Tops For Aquarium-Based Terrariums

The industry-standard glass lid for any standard aquarium!

Glass Top For Aquarium-Based Terrariums
NEHERP Staff Description:

Keeping humidity in an enclosure is critical to a live vivarium's long-term success, and these glass tops can be used to help achieve that goal. These tops are made from two pieces of hinged glass, plus one piece of flexible clear plastic. Depending on your application, different combinations of glass/plastic panels can be used to achieve the ideal amount of airflow. (Rarely are all three panels used at once!) Although these were originally designed for aquariums, live vivarium environment enthusiasts use these glass lids in a non-traditional way which combines a screen top with the glass top. Read more...Read less...

Disclaimer
The cost of a glass top + screen top (and/or other "sealing" modifications) can add up quickly. To be honest, we think this whole process is a pain in the butt compared to just using a front opening terrarium. (Read on & you'll see what we mean) In the vast majority of situations, using an Exo Terra or Zoo Med style front-opening enclosure can actually end up costing about the same or less than an aquarium after the screen/glass top costs are considered, and they carry multiple benefits beyond cost. The choice is always up to you, but the team at NEHERP almost exclusively builds using front-opening enclosures.

Aquarium Glass Top Modification - Quick & easy method:
The simplest & least expensive way to use a Glass Top on a live vivarium is by pairing it with a standard metal screen terrarium lid. Once you've selected which panel(s) you'll be using to help hold in humidity/heat (usually only 1-2 of the 3), set the top into the aquarium rim, and place a Fluker's Screen Top over it. The glass lid will fit into the inset lip of the aquarium and the screen top fits on the outside rim, so they can both fit without contacting each other. This method blocks some light, so be sure to select an appropriate Vivarium Lighting Kit! Also, if your animal species is smaller than the gap between the screen and glass top, it may be worth adding a single line of adhesive insulation strip from a hardware store between the two parts to ensure the animal won't get stuck between the two. This method is not recommended if you are caring for an animal which relies on a diet of small insects (fruit flies, tiny crickets, etc), since the Fluker's screen tops aren't considered "fruit fly proof".

Aquarium Glass Top Modification - How we'd do it:
Up for a challenge? The top style we recommend & use in-house allows for plenty of light, prevents feeder insect escape, and only takes a couple hours of extra labor. This method removes one or more of the plastic or glass panels from the Glass Top and replaces it with a custom made screen frame. Screen frame kits are available from most hardware stores, and the process is pretty straightforward if you've got a hacksaw (or better). Simply install the area of the glass top you plan to use, measure the remaining open space, and build your Screen Frame Kit (using the kit's instructions) to fit. Once fitted, you can install our screen separator as the actual screen material using Screen Spline & a Spline Tool from the hardware store. Remaining gaps around the screen frame can then be filled with beads of aquarium safe silicone, and all excess silicone can be wiped off using latex gloves. (Residual silicone residue can always be scraped off with a razor later!) Once cured, you'll be able to open the enclosure on the glass side, while the screen remains in place. This project is considered "difficult", and shouldn't be attempted unless you are comfortable with a pretty hands-on DIY project involving cutting aluminum framing, sanding down aluminum edges, fitting/mounting screen, and working with silicone to create custom seals.

Notes On All Methods:
• Most environments only require using 1-2 of the three panels included with the glass top kit, depending on goal humidity.
• Many Aquarium + Top solutions cost the same or more than a better-performing front-opening terrarium, so compare costs!
• Our Vivarium Lighting Kits are OK to place over glass, but never place heat or UVB lamps over a glass section of a top.

Screen Tops For Aquariums

Strong black metal screen covers for basic aquarium sizes

Aquarium Screen Covers For Terrariums
NEHERP Staff Description:
These are our favorite screen covers for use on aquarium enclosures. They are ultra basic, inexpensive, rugged, and simple. There are no center hinges to worry about blocking the light from penetrating into an enclosure, and no plastic parts to worry about cracking over time. Since they are made of a solid metal construction, the use of basic heat lamps is appropriate with these tops. For live vivarium environments, we recommend pairing these with our Glass Aquarium Tops to help keep humidity in. If you are working with a species prone to escaping (snakes, large lizard, etc), these screen covers are compatible with most brands of metal locking screen clips.
