About Heating

This might seem like a lot of reading, but there really is a lot to consider! Heating a vivarium properly requires a combination of controlling airflow and using the right type of heat source. Every situation is different, and there's no "one size fits all" solution for this. We can only provide a rough idea of where you might want to start. Expect to do a little tweaking to get things perfect. We've got some more detailed advice with regards to heating a vivarium, but it's a long read... Click to read more.

The importance of controlling airflow...
Most of the vivariums our customers build require a minimum of 55% relative humidity to thrive. Many methods of heating enclosures will drastically reduce humidity levels, so it's important to balance air flow when possible. Sealing part of the enclosure's top using glass inserts (or similar) will act as a basic insulator & help keep both heat & humidity within the enclosure. Once airflow is controlled properly, both temperature & humidity should remain more consistent & easier to control.

Advice for creating basking areas...
If you'll be using a basking area, we strongly recommend utilizing a thermostat with a probe mounted near the hottest area. There are many available heating solutions, but we don't recommend using any without a thermostat for safety. Our favorite setup for a basking area would be with a Pulse Proportional Thermostat, Wire Fixture, and Ceramic Heat Emitter. The simplest setup would be with a Basic Thermostat, Basic Dome Fixture, and a Black Incandescent Light. (This paragraph assumes you'll be using a NEHERP Vivarium Lighting Kit, so you won't need additional visual light from a "day" basking spotlight!)

Advice for lightly warming a whole enclosure...
To slightly raise the temperature within an enclosure, we recommend using a Zoo Med Under Tank Heater mounted to the side or rear of an enclosure. Zoo Med Repti Heat Cables can alternatively be used in either of those locations. We try to mount these types of heaters as low as possible, and out of sight. A thermostat is a good idea for this type of thing, and either heating method is compatible with any thermostat we carry.

Important Safety Related Suggestions:

1) We strongly recommend using the live vivarium's acclimation period (before introducing the animal) to iron out any heat related solutions.
2) Our vivarium lighting kits can be placed over our glass inserts without issue, but it's important to never position UVB or heat lamps over glass inserts.
3) Under tank heaters are technically not supposed to be used underneath a properly built live vivarium, due to the water in the drainage layer.
4) If the ambient room temperature will ever get cold enough to be potentially dangerous for your pet, please read this important info.

Regarding Cold Ambient Temperatures

If the ambient room temperature will ever get cold enough to be potentially dangerous for your pet in the short term, please consider heating the room or moving the enclosure to a warmer area. We try to offer the best herp supply gear out there, and we're confident in their reliability. That being said, keeping temperature sensitive animals in an especially cold room is indisputably risky, and we don't recommend it. If moving the enclosure to a warmer area isn't possible, we recommend heating the room.

A basic oil filled radiant heater is ultra inexpensive, and the least expensive mechanical ones can be dialed back to the "low" setting which should only consume around 500-600W while the element is on. It might sound like a lot, but elements in those types of heaters don't run constantly, since the oil stays warm for quite a long time. It's worth keeping the temperature to a reasonably comfortable (for a human) setting. From there, if necessary, you could use some of the hobby's heating methods to bridge the (smaller) temperature gap. In any case, this practice is reliable, cheap, and the monthly bill (if the room isn't too big) shouldn't be too bad.

While you are here reading this, we should mention that we actually recommend against the higher-end digital oil filled heaters because they don't always reset themselves after a power loss. Less expensive mechanical heaters with dials & switches only will always turn back on automatically after a power failure. :-) We've used Delonghi's basic model as a back-up heating method for years at NEHERP without any issues. (You can find them at Home Depot & Lowes!)

Thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy explanation!

▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
Zoo Med is the originator & innovator of the Deep Dome Fixture in this hobby. Between the brightly reflective inside, rugged black outside, and long-term proven reliability, we're glad to carry the whole line of Zoo Med Dome fixtures. The Mini & Standard Deep Dome Models are great for everything from Mercury Vapor Bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Bulbs, Ceramic Heat Emitters, Infrared Heat Projectors, UVB Bulbs, and of course traditional heat (incandescent) bulbs. The new "Nano" models are ideal for very small enclosures (or small areas to heat) when used in conjunction with low wattage nano bulbs. There's a separate cord and switch for every socket on each of these models, making them perfect for use with basic timers, thermostats, and more. Wattage ratings and dimensions for each model listed below the Add To Cart button. The oldest Zoo Med Deep Domes currently being used at NEHERP date back to the year 2000, back when the owner was still a high-school aged hobbyist. These are the absolute highest quality dome fixtures on the market.

Zoo Med Infrared Heat Projector

The top quality option for heat projection

The Best Heat Projector For Bioactive Vivariums Zoo Med Infrared Heat Projector For Bioactive Terrariums Zoo Med Infrared Heat Projector For Live Vivariums Zoo Med Infrared Heat Projector For Reptiles
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Zoo Med's Infrared Heat Projectors are absolutely solid, and can be super-useful for carefully heating bioactive terrarium environments. These are suitable as a 24-hour heat source for a wide variety of situations ranging from tropical to desert environments. Since they don't produce any light, Ceramic Heat Emitters won't negatively affect any animal's circadian rhythm. (Day/night cycle) These are compatible with rheostats (dimmers), standard (on/off) thermostats, or pulse proportional thermostats. Infrared Heat Projectors have an extremely long life, and last longer than even a high quality incandescent or halogen bulb. For folks looking for a way to gently heat bioactive terrariums, we'd recommend pairing these with a Thermostat for best results. Unlike Ceramic Heat Emitters (our second favorite heat option), Infrared Heat Projectors emit both Infrared A and B, which closely mimics a more natural condition. These are compatible with Zoo Med's Mini Deep Domes and Standard Deep Domes. (Not the Nano models!)
Manufacturer Description
Infrared makes up more than half of the solar energy we receive from the sun, and is defined in 3 different types. Infrared A, Infrared B, and Infrared C. The Repticare Heat Projector emits energy-rich Infrared A & B which deeply penetrates skin tissue, and/or the surface of most objects quickly and efficiently. Infrared C can be felt in the residual heat radiated by objects like rocks and other decor. Zoo Med Heat Projectors feature a carbon fiber filament housed in a high quality durable glass reflector, making it long-lasting and energy efficient.

NEHERP Staff Description - For Enclosures & Rack Systems:
We've got a lot to say about this product, so bear with us. When used correctly, it's super useful in our opinion. NEHERP Staff Description - For Enclosures & Rack Systems:
We've got a lot to say about this product, so bear with us. When used correctly, it's super useful in our opinion. For the amount of space it can heat, Repti Heat Cables are actually a great bang for the buck. While they are technically labeled for use inside & out of an enclosure, we pretty much only use them on the outside. If you click on the above photo, you can see how these are designed to be used at a glance. By looping a pattern on the bottom or side of an enclosure & securing the cable using aluminum tape, we can create a large area of gradual heat. Since Heat Cables are available in different lengths, they can be applied to rack systems or rows of enclosures just as easily as they can be used on a single enclosure. We've used them on retail displays, Leopard Gecko breeder racks, Corn Snake Racks, Ball Python Racks, and even as a supplemental heat source on a custom Bearded Dragon breeder enclosure. For live vivariums, using Heat Cable in conjunction with our Glass Inserts will increase the Heat Cable's effectiveness, since more heat will be retained & less will be lost. (Doing so will increase humidity, too!) Zoo Med recommends using Heat Cable in conjunction with a Thermostat if your room temperature will be over 80F, and we consider that good advice. Heat Cable is compatible with both types of thermostats. (Pulse Proportional and Standard On/Off)
NEHERP Staff Description - For Incubators:
In our opinion, these are the best bang for your buck heating elements for any DIY incubator ranging from 1-16 cubic feet of space. We used the 100ft Repti Heat Cable to convert a commercial refrigerator into a glass-front incubator, and it's outperformed any manufactured incubator we've compared it to. We are fans of heat cable for this purpose because the cable can be arranged to fit any incubation case which helps to distribute heat very evenly. We've got a thorough DIY incubator article on the subject, if you'd like to give it a shot!
NEHERP Staff Description - For Inside Of Enclosures
These shouldn't be submerged in water or buried in substrate. While labeled for "in-tank" use, we would only consider it a good option if a Rheostat is used. While a thermostat will adjust overall temperature within an enclosure, a rheostat can actually lower the running temperature of the Heat Cable itself. (You can use both by plugging in the Rheostat between the heat cable + Thermostat) In that case, an infrared thermometer can check the precise temperature of the cable as you adjust the rheostat up & down to suit your species. Be sure to check more than one area of the cable, as these can be a little hotter in some areas than others. Always ere on the side of caution (cooler is safer) when tweaking the rheostat.
Aluminum Heat Tape Details:
Heat cables really need some nice heat-safe tape in order to be used properly, and adding some is now an available option in-cart. This is the same high-quality tape we offer separately, only down to sections as short as 3ft for your convenience. The tape is 2mil thick, and 2in wide.
Manufacturer Description:
Repti Heat Cable allows you to put the heat right where you need it. Wrap it around branches or cage furniture! Use it underneath the tank or in breeder racks! Flexible, water resistant and durable Repti Heat Cable has numerous uses for the professional or the hobbyist. An inexpensive, low wattage secondary heat source. The first 6.5ft of Repti Heat Cables ranging from 15W to 100W are unheated to allow safe transit from the wall to the enclosure. The first three feet of the 150W/52ft model is unheated. The unheated length of the cables are included in the overall length listed on the product.

Zoo Med Under Tank Heaters

The most widely used under tank heater

NEHERP Staff Description:
Under Tank Heaters are the preferred way to efficiently add heat to any standard glass terrarium. Many species benefit from "belly heat", and these do a great job of providing it without wasting energy. This is our preferred Under Tank Heater, and is the only brand we use in house. Every snake we keep which is not on a rack display is heated with Zoo Med's Under Tank Heaters, and it's been that way for over a decade now. The new "Snake Strip" is an interesting shape, which works great against the lower back panel of enclosures, and we're currently using them on a few of our vivariums. Zoo Med recommends against using these on the bottoms of live vivariums in it's instruction manual: " ... not designed for use with water in any way ... or other situation where there is any water (with or without gravel or other substrates) in the bottom of the cage" Compatible with Zoo Med's Rheostat, and both common styles of thermostat. (Pulse Proportional and Standard On/Off)
Manufacturer Description:
ReptiTherm Under Tank Heaters are an ideal 24-hour primary or secondary heat source for tropical or temperate reptilian species. All of Zoo Med’s Under Tank Heaters are UL/cUL approved and contain a solid state nichrome heating element. These under tank heaters permanently adhere to your terrarium, forming a solid bond for optimum heat transfer. If your house temperatures can rise above 80°f we recommend you use a reptile thermostat to shut off/control the heat output of the heater.

Useful Add-On: Aluminum Duct Tape

Heat resistant reflective tape with tons of uses

Aluminum Duct Tape
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description
Essentially the same heat resistant aluminum heat tape sold at hardware stores, only at half the price! In our hobby we use these most often for holding heat tape, heat cables, and heat pads in place. It's also useful for lining light fixtures to increase reflectivity. This is the same tape we've used to line our grow rooms with reflective coating material too, and it's held up very well over the course of the years. We've even heard a rumor about some people using it to fixing ductwork. :-) High quality & thick 2 mil material, on a 30' roll.
