About Ferns

Lemon Button Fern Terrarium Best Ferns For Terrariums ET Ferns Growing Out For Sale Birds Nest Fern In Live Vivarium
Ferns are a group of primitive plants thought to contain over 10,000 species. They are widely diverse in terms of their growth habits, with some species preferring to grow epiphytically while others grow terrestrially. The reproduction process of ferns is primitive, utilizing tiny spores rather than seeds. Many ferns grow on a creeping rhizome, which sprouts more leaves/fronds as the plant extends it's reach. With so much diversity in a single group, the care advice for one species isn't likely to apply to another. Be sure to check out the individual plant's care suggestions below!

About Our Ferns

Rabbits Foot Fern In Bioactive Terrarium Kangaroo Fern In Live Vivarium Rabbits Foot Fern In Live Vivarium Mounted Fern In Bioactive Terrarium
We specialize in ferns which are appropriate for use in live vivarium environments, and we try to keep a solid variety available at all times. The smaller & less common species we have available are typically propagated in-house from our long-term mother plant stock. The propagation stock of some of the larger species are carefully hand-picked by our staff from a trusted, local family owned nursery. By working with another local grower for starter stock, we're able to steadily offer some of the least expensive terrarium appropriate ferns online, while still shipping big & healthy specimens for the price. Whether you are looking for a small decorative fern for your Bioactive Terrarium, or a large rhizomatous creeping fern for a big live vivarium display, we've got you covered!

Potted Plants:

Best Terrarium Plants For The Price Bare Rooted & Wrapped With ID
Plant nurseries roughly categorize their plants by pot size, and a plant is made available once it has mostly filled out it's container. Generally speaking, a 4in potted plant is roughly twice the size of a 3in pot, and a 3in potted plant is typically twice the size of a 2in pot. Needless to say, we do our best to offer big & healthy plants which were categorized honestly, and are representative of the photos we've got listed on the site. Every potted plant we sell is shipped bare root, and the root ball of the plant is carefully wrapped in paper towels before it's placed back into it's cleaned pot for shipping. From there, it's wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Live Mats:

Healthy Background Plants For Terrariums How We Ship Live Mat Terrarium Plants
We're proud to offer a brand new way to order plants, and we're loving the results so far. Our Live Mats are grown with plenty of light & the ideal amount of moisture required to form a dense mat. Before shipping, each section is gently separated from it's sealed container, rinsed free of excess potting soil, and carefully placed in a partially inflated airtight bag. Depending on the specific plant, live mats can planted terrestrially or attached to a background to grow epiphytically. These are exceptionally dense portions of plants, so a little can go a long way!

Rooted Portions:

How We Ship Rooted Portions Of Terrarium Plants
Some plants we grow are offered in rooted portions, which are slightly smaller portions than would typically be included in a 3in pot. The length and overall portion size depends on the species being offered, but these do include a portion of the root system for easy planting & fast acclimation. When it comes time to ship, we'll carefully separate the portion from it's mother plant, rinse the roots free of potting soil, and carefully wrap the roots in a ball of moist paper towels. From there, the plant is wrapped in clean brown packing paper and labeled with it's species before shipping.

Clippings:

How We Ship Clippings For Terrarium Plants
Clippings are the smallest size portion of what we offer. Depending on the species, clippings may or may not include small attached roots. Plants we sell as clippings are typically epiphytic in nature, meaning they'll grow without soil on the surface of another plant (or wood decor, backgrounds, etc). The difficulty in planting clippings depends entirely on the species, so don't hesitate to ask before ordering if you are curious. When it comes time to ship, we carefully clean, wrap, and seal our clippings in partially filled bags to ensure the safest transit possible. Like everything else we sell, these are individually labeled with ID.

Upside Down Fern

Upside Down Fern Upside Down Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
With it's veins & sori visible from the tops of the leaves (normally visible on the bottom), this plant earned the name the "upside down fern". This slow-growing fern throws rhizomes, which sprout small ferns once acclimated. Although the plant can eventually grow to 24in tall, it's one of the more slow growing types we offer, and it can take years for the plant to reach it's mature size. Won't require extremely frequent trimming, due to it's slow growth habit. Unlike the majority of our other evergreen ferns, this one is technically deciduous! Recommended for long-term applications as a seasonal houseplant, or in enclosures where seasonal removal is possible. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Davallia fejeensis

Rabbit's Foot Fern

Rabbit's Foot Fern Rabbit's Foot Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Our best selling species of fern. This unique plant's fuzzy rhizomes crawl across the vivarium floor & along wood vivarium decor, sprouting new growth as it spreads. Rabbit's Foot Fern does best when the substrate or growth surface isn't allowed to completely dry between watering. While it grows well in substrate/soil, it can also grow epiphytically with great results. In an enclosure, it's a great candidate for mounting on a background or planting on an elevated wood decor item. It's full grown size can take a very long time to achieve, and terrarium keepers shouldn't expect much work keeping it's size in check to fit a wide range of enclosures. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Didymochlaena truncatula

Mahogany Fern

Mahogany Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
The Mahogany Fern's immature leaves are a red/mahogany color, which turn green as the plant matures. This is one of our largest growing ferns, and can slowly grow to be 24-36" high. It's a slow grower, so it's pretty manageable in larger enclosures with a little trimming, or always for use as a houseplant. We typically use it in 24in+ tall enclosures with larger inhabitant species. A great choice for anyone going for a "fern forest" look. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Heart Fern

Heart Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A beautiful heart-shaped miniature fern that thrives in humid conditions! This species requires a fair amount of humidity to thrive, and isn't recommended for environments which won't sustain at least 65% R/H. As a houseplant, the humidity requirement is the most difficult part about caring for this plant. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

▾ Show Plant Description ▾
Microgramma species are slow growing tiny epiphytic ferns which require high humidity to thrive. When mounted to a background or wood decor, these will slowly spread along a fuzzy rhizome. Microgramma can really bring thigs like Ghostwood & Cork-heavy custom backgrounds to life, as the plant spreads fine green leaves all along the suface of the surrounding decor. Microsorum pustulatum

Kangaroo Fern

Kangaroo Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A medium to large species with beautiful glossy green leaves. This plant grows on a rhizome in a trailing/vining pattern. Younger plants (as shown & sold) have multiple fronds that eventually grow into wider pinnae, which resemble a Kangaroo's footprint. An excellent choice for vivaria housing inhabitants large or small. In nature, this plant grows epiphytically on tree branches, as well as at ground level. This plant's is a great looking & easy choice for many vivariums, especially enclosures housing larger species of Reptile & Amphibian. At NEHERP, we often use these in Gargoyle Gecko, Crested Gecko, and Leachianus Gecko live vivariums, and the plants absolutely thrive. Can easily be mounted on a background, so long as the rhizome is wrapped with a little Sphagnum. Sometimes called Microsorum diversifolium. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Lemon Button Fern

Lemon Button Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
One of our most popular terrestrial plants, Lemon Button Fern is excellent for use in many applications. It's growth pattern is very attractive, and the species is as forgiving as it is easy to grow. This fern throws thin, fuzzy rhizomes as it acclimates, which can spread & sprout more ferns over time. Each frond grows to around 9-12" high before fronds arching downward. This quick-growing species is easy to mount on backgrounds & in other elevated locations. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Pellaea rotundifolia

Button Fern

Button Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A low-growing fern that makes a great addition to a live vivarium. Although the fronds grow to about 12 inches in length, the plant rarely grows over 10" tall or so, since the arc of each frond is fairly low. As the plant matures, the leaves become more oval (as opposed to round in immature plants), and the stems turn to a deep red color. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Polypodium formosanum 'Cristatum'

ET Fern

ET Fern Rhizome ET Fern ET Fern Rhizome
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A rare, unique, and interesting fern with otherworldly rhizome shapes! Each of these slow growing ferns took a couple months to be ready to ship, and they aren't available frequently. The electric green rhizomes are covered in equally bright green fronds. These can be grown epiphytically, although it's proven to be more difficult than simply planting them on soil (as a houseplant) or substrate (in an enclosure). Among the most interesting & sought-after ferns we work with. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Platycerium sp.

Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Fern
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A very unique epiphytic tropical plant that's native to many locations throughout the world. These are most commonly kept as a curious looking houseplant, and we're fairly certain these are actually Platycerium bifurcatum. Although sold at around 8-12" wide, these can slowly grow to be very large, and aren't well suited for most small & medium sized enclosures. If planted in an enclosure, we suggest mounting it in sphagnum moss to a cork flat or tree fern piece for long-term success. Wikipediaext link also has a bunch of info on Platycerium, and it's worth reading if you are considering grabbing one. While we do our best to grow every plant we can in-house, this species is very slow to grow and ours are typically sourced from a specialty greenhouse we've been working with for years. The pictured plant is growing in a 4in pot.

Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffii'

▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This Pyrrosia is a small, uncommon, slow-growing epiphytic tropical fern. These plants grow along a fuzzy rhizome, sprouting green leaves along the way.
