About Our Enclosures:
Choosing An Enclosure
Every vivarium build is different because every builder is different. For the most part, we customize commercially available enclosures to suit our needs, since it's typically the best bang for your buck. Off-the-shelf enclosures have durable frames which help prevent damage, are easy to come by, and have manufacturer warranties. Many can be used "as is", while others may require some customization to suit the needs of a specific animal species. Exo Terra and Zoo Med terrariums are our most-used brands thanks to their consistent quality & low overall cost. They are also exponentially more reliable in build quality and delivery speed than some of the newer brands sold on major marketplaces. Every enclosure mentioned on this page is fully supported through our Bioactive Vivarium Kits. We'll run through each of the types we recommend below!
Working With Exo Terra & Zoo Med Enclosures
The two best selling brands of front opening terrariums are great places to start. Our business manufactures small glass inserts to install on the tops of these enclosures, which help to keep humidity & heat inside while still allowing for an appropriate amount of airflow. We recommend glass inserts for all enclosures which require relative humidity levels over 65%. Heating these enclosures (if required) can be done by mounting under-tank heaters to the side of the enclosures, or small heat lamps on top. (Never above a glass insert, please!) More extreme customizations for the Exo Terra models specifically include building the enclosures backwards, with the background mounted onto the doors of the enclosures so they open from the rear. That's a seriously tough job to do while keeping things looking great, and we only recommend it for especially seasoned & confident builders.
Working With Aquarium Enclosures
Aquariums are the cheapest enclosures to purchase at first, but these generally require more customization than other options. Vertical Conversion Kits are a popular method of making these more useful by tipping them on their side & allowing them to be front-opening. We're a fan of vert kits, however they do have major drawbacks when it comes to adding a heat lamp, heat emitter, or UVB bulb. (All of which are incompatible) Leaving an aquarium in it's standard orientation works well too, however a custom top will be required for long-term success. Standard aquarium glass tops can be used in conjunction with screen tops to keep heat, humidity, and the inhabitants inside the enclosure. Unfortunately the purchase of those two (usually necessary) add-ons often makes an aquarium enclosure slightly more expensive than an equally-sized front opening terrarium. At NEHERP, we typically only use aquariums for custom work where a seamless front is required (see desk-mounted photo above), or for Vertical Conversion Kits. Further customization is always possible, if the builder is up for a challenge!

Grow Out Enclosure Kit (Live) - 32oz
A convenient temporary home for a variety of tiny animals
A grow out enclosure (often just called a "growout") is built to temporarily house an animal for one reason or another. When a hatchling makes it's first steps into the world, there can be benefits of housing it individually, rather than in a group of young'uns or with it's parents. The offspring of certain species are so tiny that they can escape through the cracks of many major brand name enclosures, and many of those enclosures are so large that the little ones would have a hard time searching for food. In situations like these, housing the little animal in his or her own growout will make a keeper's job simpler and the animal's life safer. As soon as the animal grows a little and can be housed in a more permanent home, the growout enclosure can be disassembled, cleaned, and re-purposed or simply discarded. (Hide this paragraph)
There are a handful of different solutions for illuminating these enclosures. Our favorite option is Current Satellite LED+, since they are cool enough to be mounted just a couple inches away from the lids while providing excellent PAR specs at that distance. A less expensive & more powerful option is Jump Start T5HO lighting, which runs hotter & requires them to be mounted a little further from the cups. Either lighting option is available in a variety of lengths, so we'd recommend choosing the one which suits your needs best. With 2-cup-deep rows (pictured above), a 24in fixture can illuminate 10 cups, while a 48in fixture can illuminate 20-22. Moss (not included) can be added for an upgraded aesthetic effect, but it's not truly necessary or practically beneficial in these setups. The plants we include with this kit are very easy to grow, and shouldn't be a problem for even the most novice caregiver when the correct type of lighting is used. Please keep in mind that UVB light will not pass through plastic, and although there's a metal mesh lid on each cup (which allows some UVB to pass), we don't feel comfortable recommending these Grow Out Kits for any species which requires UVB light to synthesize Vitamin D3. These are not complete live vivarium environments, so some upkeep will be necessary. Having said that, these little kits can perform fairly well if Springtails (not included) are added to help fragment the waste of the inhabitant. Some spot cleaning may be necessary for certain species, but these are still fairly low-maintenance compared to most other options. At NEHERP we mist these enclosures 2-3X daily, feed every other day, and perform spot cleaning as needed. (Hide this paragraph)
We've used setups like these to temporarily house a variety of different hatchling species. These are also useful for quarantining small new animal acquisitions. Each kit includes a 32oz FabriKal cup, matching Metal Mesh Lid, small piece of wood decor, substrate, and two live plants. The wood decor is typically Manzanita, hand-cut to fit into a 32oz deli cup. The included substrate is a modified V2 Vivarium Substrate intended to hold a little more moisture for this short-term purpose. Springtails and/or Isopods (not included) will still thrive in this mix, and the growout substrate can later be poured into the animal's permanent home when it's appropriate to help seed it with microfauna. The two live plants we include in every kit are well rooted (equivalent to 2in pots) growers choice varieties. Each type is selected to thrive in a wide range of conditions ranging from 55%-95% relative humidity, and will be specifically labeled with plant species & bare rooted like every other plant we sell. Occasional trimming may be necessary for longer-lived temporary homes, and the plants can also be re-used in the animal's permanent home if desired. To keep maintenance schedules uniform & predictable, we typically include just 2-3 species of plants per order. Kit quantities of 3 and greater will have grouped packaging to keep shipping simple, while maintaining individual plant IDs per package.
Please review our perishable shipping policy before ordering. Please allow up to 5 business days for the 50qty option to process & ship.
This is a very small enclosure for temporarily housing very small young animals. Please do your research & ensure this is an appropriate choice before buying.
