Are plant shipments guaranteed to arrive healthy?
Absolutely, so long as our shipping guidelines are followed. You can learn more by closing this FAQ panel & selecting "Perishable Guarantee" towards the bottom of the page. View our full shipping guarantee policy on our Shipping Policy Page.
Will the plants be labeled with species?
Yep! Every kit plant is labeled with specific species so you'll know exactly what you are working with. We'll include cultivar info too, whenever we can.
When do you ship plants?
We ship plants year-round. If temps are extreme (below 20F or above 95F), we'll email you after you order to reserve your plants & schedule a shipment as soon as possible.
How long does it take to ship plants?
We process & ship orders as quickly as we can. While we do our best to ship supply orders the same or next business day, it's not always safe (or possible) for us to do the same with orders containing plants. Plant orders carry a processing time of 1-3 days and are always scheduled to avoid weekend transit delays to help ensure healthy arrival. Please keep this in mind if you are ordering a few days before a weekend, since your order will probably not ship until the following Monday.
How are plants prepped before they ship?
Our plants are bare rooted (rinsed free of all potting soil), and rinsed thoroughly to ensure full hydration & a clean appearance. Then the cleaned root structure is carefully wrapped in a moist paper towel ball, which is tightly placed back into the (cleaned) pot. From there, the plant & pot are tightly wrapped in thick brown paper for shipping, and labeled with appropriate ID for convenience. Epiphytes are handled a little differently, and are sometimes shipped in clear sealed containers for added safety.
Do you use chemical fertilizers at NEHERP?
We do not use inorganic chemical fertilizers or manure-based nutrients in our grow rooms NEHERP. The nutrients we use are derived from organic BioBizz brand products, as well as natural products like forest humus, worm castings, and kelp meal. All of our growing methods are carefully tailored to ensure your animals won't be put at risk.
Do you use pesticides at NEHERP?
We prevent pest issues through tight quarantine policies, restricted access to our grow rooms, and specific rules about introducing new plants to be propagated. Beyond basic prevention, we use chemical-free mechanical traps, as well as one or two other organic pest prevention methods. Absolutely no inorganic pesticides are used at NEHERP.
What types of environments are these suited for?
Our plant assortments can be tailored to meet growth conditions ranging from 55% to 99% relative humidity. (Perfect for the vast majority of popular vivarium species!) Environments with humidity towards the lower end of that range will require more frequent misting to ensure the NEHERP Moss will thrive within the enclosure. If your enclosure isn't expected to average 75% R/H or higher, we suggest not selecting the optional Moss Slurry, since it's more sensitive & requires a very humid environment to thrive. Sorry, we do not offer desert/arid plant kits at this time.
What type of plants will I receive?
It's tough to be more specific, but there's a good reason for the slight ambiguity, here. The thing is, we work with hundreds of different plant varieties, our availability changes constantly, and each kit is custom-tailored around a specific animal species. In short, it's really difficult for us to offer a specific assortment description which would apply accurately to everyone's situation. We don't include plants we'd consider lame (more on that later), or inappropriately sized for your 24X18X24 enclosure. Our basic goal is to provide a selection of plants that we'd use ourselves if we were building a 24X18X24 vivarium for your specified animal, without including too many plants that would significantly raise the price of each kit.
What size plants will I receive?
We don't include clippings, plugs, or 2in pots in our kits. The smallest potted specimen you'll receive will be an established plant from a 3in pot, and the largest may be a fully mature plant from a 4in pot. If a Tillandsia is included (only if it's appropriate for your species), it will be a mature plant. The only time we'll consider including a rooted portion of something is if it's rare or more expensive than a typical kit plant. Our plant kits are by far the cheapest way to purchase our healthy plants, and we're confident that you'll appreciate the quality we offer.
Are Neoregelias included in this kit?
We don't usually include Neoregelias in our plant kits because our kits are priced too low for this to be an option. If you'd like to add some to your kit, check out our Neoregelia Offsets. Offsets are our cheapest way to snag one of these plants by far. Since your animal species & enclosure size will be included with this plant pack, our staff will do our best to pull an appropriate variety/size for your specific setup!
How should I take care of the plants until the vivarium is ready to be planted?
We include pots in every shipment. If your plants will be used within 10 days of the initial ship date, you can leave the root ball wrapped, keep it moistened, and provide it with some light near a window. When it comes time to plant, simply proceed along with the typical plant care advice included with every shipment. If your plants will be "on hold" longer than that, we'd recommend planting them in the pots using substrate from your base kit, and placing them near some bright natural light. So long as they are misted & watered on schedule, they should be completely fine in those conditions for quite awhile.
What type of lighting should I use?
We strongly recommend our inexpensive, proven, and downright awesome 24X18X24 Vivarium Lighting Kit, or suggested alternative posted at the bottom of the kit page. It goes without saying that poor lighting will lead to poor plant growth performance. For more lighting related answers, check out your 24X18X24's Vivarium Lighting Kit page and it's FAQ section.
What are the differences between standard plant kits and heavy duty plant kits?
Plant kits for large animals will include more robust, less delicate plants, and the image previews on the HD Plant Packs Page more accurately represent that type of assortment. Otherwise, both kits cost the same, and are entirely dependent on the type of species/environment you specify.
Are there differences between your plants and what I'd find at my local store?
Our plants are definitely different in a few ways.
First off, not many mainstream garden centers carry truly terrarium appropriate plants, so the selection will most likely be limited by comparison. There are a ton of examples here, but the easiest one to identify would be our NEHERP Moss & Moss Slurry. Even other "specialty" companies have a tough time beating our proven mosses. Moss aside, we work with a couple hundred species of plants, and the overwhelming majority aren't shown on the plant menu since they are reserved for kit customers like you. We'll keep your inhabitant species in mind while we pull your assortment, so there's no guesswork!
Second, there's the issue of product support. When it comes to our plants, we've got your back with free vivarium consultations for all kit customers. Not sure where to plant or how to take care of a specific plant? We've got your back.
Finally, not all plants are the same - even if they are the same species of plant. Non-specialty companies can produce plants on a massive scale without breaking the bank thanks to pesticides, fungicides, and extended release fertilizers. All inorganic chemicals like that aren't really what we'd consider safe, but our biggest concern with plants sourced from mainstream grow operations would be systemic chemicals. Systemic insecticides & fungicides are super inexpensive, stupendously effective, and they are absorbed directly into & throughout a plants cells. They basically make a plant bulletproof from a grower's standpoint, while simultaneously making the plant useless for our hobby. Unlike standard pesticides & fungicides (which are plenty bad), systemic chemicals can't wash off, don't quickly dissipate, and can stay within a plant's cells for months or years. It's not always about what you'll get. Sometimes it's about what you'll avoid getting!
