Bio-Active Vivarium Introductory FAQ
Here's some basic info we hope you'll find helpful!

Question:
Will a live vivarium require a lot of upkeep?
Answer:
A well built live vivarium requires far less maintenance than a typical terrarium that someone might put together using "pet store parts". The only maintenance for most species will be feeding, misting, and wiping down the glass on occasion.

Question:
Is a vivarium difficult to build?
Answer:
Putting together the mandatory basics for a live vivarium (substrate kit + plant kit + lighting kit) is pretty straightforward. Creating a custom background is probably the most difficult step, but it's totally optional. There are a couple different background style variants available with different levels of difficulty. After the easy basics are considered, customizing a live vivarium is as easy or as difficult as you'd like it to be. If you haven't researched the process yet, it might be worth reading through Vivarium Construction 101 before continuing. A complete kit includes everything you need to get the job done, and that article works as a great step-by-step instruction manual.

Question:
Is a vivarium difficult to maintain?
Answer:
No. The decreased level of maintenance compared to a standard enclosure is one of the best parts about building a live vivarium environment. Most vivariums require daily misting (which can be automated), monthly plant trimming, and occasional wiping-down of the glass surfaces. That's it! If your inhabitant species is of an average size (under ~9-10in), and your environment is of a typical humidity range (55%-99% R/H), all animal waste should break down quickly & naturally. Larger inhabitants or more arid environments may require spot cleaning of animal waste. For the most part, live vivarium environments are easy and rewarding to care for.

Question:
What's the estimated cost of upkeep?
Answer:
Nobody likes a new monthly bill. The average enclosure we sell uses between 30W-45W of energy for lighting which should run 12 hours daily. At a cost of $0.12/kWh (avg. cost for US consumers in 2018 according to NPR), the expected expense would be between $1.31-$1.97 per month. Other extras like misting systems & heaters might add a negligible amount more, but the cost is still extremely small overall.

Question:
Is it true there are bugs?
Answer:
We love this question. Especially when there's an ominous & very concerned sounding pause before the word "bugs"! Microfauna like Springtails play an important role in one of the trophic levels of a live vivarium's food web. These tiny (~1/16in!) critters primarily reside in the substrate layer and will occasionally venture out onto the leaf litter, wood decor, and elsewhere in the enclosure to help keep things clean. The species we work with won't survive outside of a vivarium in a typical human home, so they'll stay put within the enclosure. While they aren't the only detritivores in the environment you'll be building, they are the most commonly discussed. Mycorrhizal fungi plays an equally important part, as do the multiple microorganisms found in the substrate layer. In summary, it wouldn't be a slice of nature without the actual nature part! :-)

Question:
Will it really look as good as the photos I've seen online?
Answer:
Your vivarium really can be epic. If you are a first time builder looking to start by building a really large display vivarium, we might recommend starting with a smaller one first. Little enclosures are easier (and obviously less expensive) than building huge ones. Small custom backgrounds are also a lot more manageable for a first-time builder. Having a little experience under your belt can go a long way towards creating a more advanced & larger design. We'd recommend that you take your time and read through the articles carefully. Our kits ensure you'll have all the basic tools necessary to build an incredible looking bio active environment.

Question:
Can I specify more than one animal species for my complete kit?
Answer:
We'll do our best to accommodate any species mentioned in a Complete Kit's submission, but we strongly recommend against mixing species in almost every situation. (Unless you are one of our experienced Zoo, Nature Center, or Veterinarian clients!) Adding more than one species to a single enclosure offers no tangible benefits and plenty of drawbacks to both the vivarium itself, as well as it's inhabitants. We go into a little more detail on that subject in our Vivarium Checklist Article. (#2 of the "10 important points")

Question:
Will one of your kits work if I don't intend to keep live animals in it?
Answer:
Absolutely. In the short term there are zero build differences to consider. Since the environment won't have animal waste available to help provide nutrients to the plants, it will eventually become necessary to fertilize your plants with some organic plant nutrients/fertilizer. That's usually not necessary for a few months after the enclosure is built, and it's a pretty simple task when it comes time. Instead of feeding your animals on a schedule, you'll just need to feed the plants directly every few months or so.

Question:
Can I add a water feature? (Waterfall, stream, etc)
Answer:
For more reasons than would fit on this page, we strongly recommend against adding water features to live vivarium environments unless the inhabitant absolutely requires one to thrive. Water bowls require a little extra maintenance in terms of water changes, but they are often times the safest bet. Please contact us if you'd like to talk it over, since there are a ton of things to consider.

About Our Vivarium Lighting Kits:
NEHERP Vivarium Lighting Kits are designed to ensure enclosed bioactive ecosystems will look and perform exactly like a slice of nature should. We've designed this 8X8X8 Lighting Kit around all of the important factors described in Vivarium Lighting 101 article; the #1 Vivarium Lighting Guide on the web. Each kit features the ideal color temperature & color rendering index to ensure that an enclosure's contents will appear naturally accurate. We've thoroughly tested the plant growth performance of each option to ensure there is plenty of PAR light to grow plants vigorously at every level within an enclosure. Illuminance figures were also kept in mind to ensure the kits will appear bright enough to be naturally realistic to the human eye. In plain English, our vivarium kits were designed to brightly illuminate bioactive terrariums with naturally realistic light which will grow plants with ease... Without breaking the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Question:
What about UVB light?
Answer:
UVB is beneficial to certain animal species, but PAR light is what plants & live vivariums need to thrive. Our kits produce enough PAR to grow plants in your enclosure, but they do not produce any UVB. If your animal species requires UVB light in captivity, adding a supplemental UVB light source is easy! Check out our Vivarium Extras for 8X8X8 Terrarium page for your enclosure's recommended UVB light add-on.

Question:
How long should the lights be on every day?
Answer:
The lighting kit should be left on for about 12 hours every day, with as much consistency as possible. This will simulate our planet's 24 hour cycle, and should help promote a healthy circadian rhythm for all the plants & inhabitants within the enclosure. If your home gets hot during the summer, it's perfectly OK to keep the lights on for as little as 10 hours per day to fight high-temps. (Just keep in mind plants will grow less vigorously this way) While not 100% necessary, Inexpensive timers work great for this purpose, although digital timers have a couple benefits. For more info on the subject of circadian rhythm, check out our Setting Timers Section in Vivarium Lighting 101.

Question:
Can I dim these lights?
Answer:
Nope. Our kits were designed to offer high levels of performance at the lowest price without sacrificing quality. We do carry other lighting options with more features though! Check out some of the alternative lighting solutions we've got for your 8X8X8 Terrarium by closing this FAQ panel & selecting "Alternative Lighting Solutions".

Question:
Will these provide heat?
Answer:
Our kits produce little heat, especially LED kits. Check out our heating section for heat sources.

Question:
Do the LEDs carry a guarantee?
Answer:
The LEDs available in our kits are guaranteed for 1 year, and we're proud to say the replacement rate is incredibly low. (The replacement guarantees are serviceable directly through us!) Ensuring heat is allowed to escape from the LED unit(s) is the most important step you can take to extend service life. A printed copy of a few simple tricks to reduce heat are included with every kit.

Question:
How long will CFLs last?
Answer:
CFLs last quite a while, and we guarantee them for 1 year. Having said that, all fluorescent lights degrade with time, and we highly recommend replacing them every 8-14 months to ensure there's enough PAR light being produced by the bulbs.

Question:
Are they water proof?
Answer:
None of the lights we sell in our kits are water proof, water resistant, or are in any way impervious to water. Like with any electrical product, it's critical to ensure they stay completely dry at all times to prevent risk of shock & fire.

Comparing Cork & Ghostwood
The decision of wood type isn't really a question of "which type is better", so much as it is "which is right for me". Both can be used as starting points to create backgrounds ranging from beginner backgrounds to museum quality displays, and both have a bunch of benefits in common compared to other types of wood sometimes used in the hobby. Either type will last long term without breaking down, can be used with many different species, and will support epiphytic plant growth with ease. Both are lighter than Malaysian Driftwood & Mopani, and both will drastically outperform lower-end options like Grape Vine in the long run. Below, we'll describe some differences which we hope will help you decide on what's best for your setup.

Cork based backgrounds are easy enough for a first time builder to create, and versatile enough to fit the needs of even museum quality display work. Because cork is fairly soft, larger pieces can be broken & shaped by hand, and it's easily customized even further using basic hand tools if extra precision is necessary. Cork is available in rounds and flats, which helps create a 3D look appropriate for different species with little effort. Planting a cork background is a cinch if rounds or half-rounds are utilized for planting spots, and it's soft enough to poke holes for mounting epiphytic plants. It's also far lighter (per cubic inch) than just about any vivarium appropriate wood on the market, which makes it extremely easy to mount to the enclosure. For larger species, cork can be tightly tiled onto a background in a mosaic pattern for significantly increased durability; even for some species with claws. Cork based backgrounds are our best selling choice, due to the ease of creation, design flexibility, and awesome finished product.

Ghostwood

Ghostwood can create dramatic hardscape structures which are hard to replicate with other wood types. For example, it's great for creating the look of exposed root structures, tree buttresses, elevated vines, and similar designs. Ghostwood is heavier than cork and more difficult to cut & shape, but it can still be done with patience & hand tools. The branch(es) included in the kit will make creating an aggressive looking 3D background easy, with the trade-off of increased labor for foam work to fill space around the branches & accents. Adding some Cork Gallon Bags (for smaller enclosures) or a small assortment of Bulk Cork (for larger ones) to a Ghostwood based background kit will make the build far easier, at a slightly elevated expense. Lightweight Volcanic Rock is another great way to fill background spaces, if you are comfortable working with a slightly more challenging product. We'd consider Ghostwood a slightly more advanced choice for building backgrounds.

Considering a different type of wood?
A note about other wood decor...
We only include Cork & Ghostwood assortments in our kits since they are the easiest, least expensive, and often best looking options which perform to our standards. Still, they aren't the only options! If you are comfortable piecing together your own wood selection for use with a "supplies only" background kit, we wanted to mention a couple important points.

Grape wood (also called Grapevine) isn't recommended for custom vivarium backgrounds since it's prone to rotting in humid environments. It might not be bad for enclosures averaging below 50% R/H, but that's a pretty uncommon statistic for a live vivarium.

Malaysian Driftwood is extremely dense, difficult to cut, and heavy. This creates many mounting & design challenges for using it on a custom background, and we wouldn't recommend it unless you are comfortable working with your hands, and have previous custom background experience.

Mopani Wood is the heaviest & most difficult type of wood to use on a custom background in our opinion. It's too dense to easily cut using hand tools, and using power tools like compound miter saws isn't recommended, since it has the tendency to crack and "explode" mid-cut. (Yes, we speak from experience!) Since Mopani is super heavy & rarely has a flat surface for easy mounting, it's an exceptionally difficult choice for backgrounds, and we don't typically recommend it.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Question:
Do you have more photo examples?
Answer:
Yep! Visit our Vivarium Gallery W/Custom Backgrounds for some "vivspiration". Not all of the vivariums in that gallery are based on our Custom Background Kits, but most are. When you get to the gallery, select "About The Vivarium ID Numbers" for help identifying what type of background kit was used in each photo.

Question:
Which animal species are these kits appropriate for?
Answer:
These are appropriate for the vast majority of vivarium inhabitant species which are popular today. In broad terms, Dart Frogs, Tree Frogs, Small Reptiles, and even some Arboreal Snakes are perfect candidates for Ghostwood or Cork based Custom Background Kits with minimal effort. Larger species with claws can damage softer foam areas over the course of a few years, so for clawed Geckos & Lizards over 8in we recommend avoiding the Ghostwood option and instead creating a tight cork mosaic. By limiting the amount of exposed foam & covering background mix, the custom background can look & perform great for years even with some larger inhabitants like leachianus Geckos, Giant Day Geckos, and similar species. For a visual example of custom backgrounds designed for larger species, check out the first couple images in our Custom Background Vivarium Image Gallery (Vivarium IDs: CB1 & CB2). For an easier to build, more durable, less detailed custom background, check out our Heavy Duty Custom Background Kits. If you are building for a larger reptile species (over 10in) & would like some advice on how to move forward, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're happy to help!

Question:
Will the "No Wood" option be enough to create a custom background?
Answer:
Technically yes, but it's not what the kit was designed to do. We included the "no wood" option for those who will be purchasing specific wood decor separately. There are other types of wood out there, but Ghostwood & Cork are the easiest, most popular, and often times best looking options. Still, we've seen our supplies-only background kits used with Modular Cork Planters, Malaysian Driftwood, Tree Fern Panels, and even lightweight Volcanic Rock.. Without some type of natural decor mounted on the background, it won't look nearly as realistic.

Question:
Is this an appropriate project for a child of X age?
Answer:
This kit was designed to be used by adults. If you are a parent or teacher considering this kit, we'd recommend completing the background part of the enclosure yourself, or with their very closely supervised help. Allowing the young'uns to help with the rest of the vivarium project is usually no problem.

Question:
Will these background kits stand up to high humidity?
Answer:
Absolutely. We don't recommend them for aquatic/submerged use, but even the highest levels of humidity won't cause a problem for our background kits, if the instructions are followed. Frequent (multiple times daily) direct misting is also completely acceptable. Cork and Ghostwood break down much, much slower than most other types of wood and should last for years & years even in the most humid conditions.

Question:
What if the background begins to come loose from the enclosure?
Answer:
It hasn't happened to any client we're aware of, or in any of our vivariums in the past decade when the instructions are followed. Our silicone has a very high tensile strength (520psi) and shear strength (203-212psi) which helps prevent background-failure disasters.

Question:
Is the background removable or reusable
Answer:
No. You might be able to pull out some of the wood decor if you'd like to tear down your vivarium, but doing so may break the glass due to the silicone's high levels of adhesion holding things together. Our custom backgrounds should be considered permanent.

Question:
What should I expect when the background is finished & the vivarium is built?
Answer:
All the typical healthy vivarium acclimation signs described in Vivarium Construction 102 are to be expected. In short, after a few weeks the plants will begin to acclimate to the background, moss slurry (if applied) should start to take off, and you can expect to see some microfauna activity in the substrate layer.

Your plant assortment depends on your animal species, not on the selection you make now! :-)

The reason we're asking about your animal's size right now is just so we can show you a more accurate visual selection of plant species on the next step. The plants you actually receive will ultimately depend on the type of animal you specify during step 6; not on the selection you make now. Frequently Asked Questions:

Question:
Are plant shipments guaranteed to arrive healthy?
Answer:
Absolutely, so long as our shipping guidelines are followed. You can learn more by closing this FAQ panel & selecting "Perishable Guarantee" towards the bottom of the page. View our full shipping guarantee policy on our Shipping Policy Page.

Question:
Will the plants be labeled with species?
Answer:
Yep! Every kit plant is labeled with specific species so you'll know exactly what you are working with. We'll include cultivar info too, whenever we can.

Question:
When do you ship plants?
Answer:
We ship plants year-round, Monday through Thursday. The base processing time of a plant order (before shipping/transit times) is 1-3 days, not including scheduling around weekend delays. If temps are extreme (below 20F or above 95F), we'll email you after you order to work out a the quickest safe solution.

Question:
How long does it take to ship plants?
Answer:
We process & ship orders as quickly as we can. While we do our best to ship supply orders the same or next business day, it's not always safe (or possible) for us to do the same with orders containing plants. Plant orders carry a processing time of 1-3 days and are always scheduled to avoid weekend transit delays to help ensure healthy arrival. Please keep this in mind if you are ordering a few days before a weekend, since your order will probably not ship until the following Monday.

Question:
Why isn't Moss Slurry included or available with Complete Kits?
Answer:
Moss Slurry isn't available as part of our Complete Vivarium Kits because it needs to be used within a couple days of arrival, and most vivariums wouldn't be finished by then. The other plants in the kit can handle out-of-vivarium care while the vivarium is being built, but Slurry can't. If you'd like to purchase some Moss Slurry for your vivarium, we'd recommend waiting until your enclosure is completely finished before ordering it. Since it's planted on backgrounds & other decor, it's usually the "finishing touch" before an enclosure is 100% finished.

Question:
How are plants prepped before they ship?
Answer:
Our plants are bare rooted (rinsed free of all potting soil), and rinsed thoroughly to ensure full hydration & a clean appearance. Then the cleaned root structure is carefully wrapped in a moist paper towel ball, which is tightly placed back into the (cleaned) pot. From there, the plant & pot are tightly wrapped in thick brown paper for shipping, and labeled with appropriate ID for convenience. Epiphytes are handled a little differently, and are sometimes shipped in clear sealed containers for added safety.

Bare rooting a plant before shipping is a legal requirement to some areas, but it also helps minimize your shipping cost & the likelihood of damage, since each specimen is significantly lighter. Plus, it makes processing your plants a cinch! We've got an awesome "healthy arrival" track record using these methods, and we're sure you'll appreciate the effort when it comes time to unwrap your plants!

Question:
Do you use chemical fertilizers at NEHERP?
Answer:
We do not use inorganic chemical fertilizers or manure-based nutrients in our grow rooms NEHERP. The nutrients we use are derived from organic BioBizz brand products, as well as natural products like forest humus, worm castings, and kelp meal. All of our growing methods are carefully tailored to ensure your animals won't be put at risk.

Question:
Do you use pesticides at NEHERP?
Answer:
We prevent pest issues through tight quarantine policies, restricted access to our grow rooms, and specific rules about introducing new plants to be propagated. Beyond basic prevention, we use chemical-free mechanical traps, as well as one or two other organic pest prevention methods. Absolutely no inorganic pesticides are used at NEHERP.

Question:
What types of environments are these suited for?
Answer:
Our plant assortments can be tailored to meet growth conditions ranging from 55% to 99% relative humidity. (Perfect for the vast majority of popular vivarium species!) Environments with humidity towards the lower end of that range will require more frequent misting to ensure the NEHERP Moss will thrive within the enclosure. Sorry, we do not offer desert/arid plant kits at this time.

Question:
What type of plants will I receive?
Answer:
It's tough to be more specific, but there's a good reason for the slight ambiguity, here. The thing is, we work with hundreds of different plant varieties, our availability changes constantly, and each kit is custom-tailored around a specific animal species. In short, it's really difficult for us to offer a specific assortment description which would apply accurately to everyone's situation. We don't include plants we'd consider lame (more on that later), or inappropriately sized for your 8X8X8 enclosure. Our basic goal is to provide a selection of plants that we'd use ourselves if we were building a 8X8X8 vivarium for your specified animal, without including too many plants that would significantly raise the price of each kit.

If you are concerned about receiving a package of unexciting houseplants, we're happy to ease your fears! (Examples: Areca Palm, Croton, Dieffenbachia / "Dumb Cane", Dracaena, Ficus elastica / "Rubber Plant", Nephthytis / "Arrowhead Plant", Pachira aquatica / "Money Tree", Schefflera / "Umbrella Plant") We don't grow those plants, we don't stock them, and we've never shipped one to any client who didn't special order one. We want to earn your repeat business by offering nice plant assortments, and we're glad to say that a significant amount of plant packs are sold to repeat customers. :-)

Question:
What size plants will I receive?
Answer:
We don't include clippings, plugs, or 2in pots in our kits. The smallest potted specimen you'll receive will be an established plant from a 3in pot, and the largest may be a fully mature plant from a 4in pot. If a Tillandsia is included (only if it's appropriate for your species), it will be a mature plant. The only time we'll consider including a rooted portion of something is if it's rare or more expensive than a typical kit plant. Our plant kits are by far the cheapest way to purchase our healthy plants, and we're confident that you'll appreciate the quality we offer.

Question:
Are Neoregelias included in this kit?
Answer:
We don't usually include Neoregelias in our plant kits because our kits are priced too low for this to be an option. If you'd like to add some to your kit, check out our Neoregelia Offsets. Offsets are our cheapest way to snag one of these plants by far. Since your animal species & enclosure size will be included with this plant pack, our staff will do our best to pull an appropriate variety/size for your specific setup!

Question:
How should I take care of the plants until the vivarium is ready to be planted?
Answer:
We include pots in every shipment. If your plants will be used within 10 days of the initial ship date, you can leave the root ball wrapped, keep it moistened, and provide it with some light near a window. When it comes time to plant, simply proceed along with the typical plant care advice included with every shipment. If your plants will be "on hold" longer than that, we'd recommend planting them in the pots using substrate from your base kit, and placing them near some bright natural light. So long as they are misted & watered on schedule, they should be completely fine in those conditions for quite awhile.

Question:
What are the differences between standard plant kits and heavy duty plant kits?
Answer:
Plant kits for large animals will include more robust, less delicate plants, and the image previews on the HD Plant Packs Page more accurately represent that type of assortment. Otherwise, both kits cost the same, and are entirely dependent on the type of species/environment you specify.
Question:
What are the differences between heavy duty plant kits and the standard plant kits?
Answer:
Our heavy duty plant kits are for larger animals and will include more robust, less delicate plants. The plants shown in the example above reflect different types of robust species better suited for larger animal species. The plants shown on the standard plant kits page reflect slightly more delicate plants which we wouldn't necessarily recommend for bigger Reptiles & Amphibians. Both kits cost the same, and plant selections are entirely dependent on the type of species/environment you specify.

Question:
Are there differences between your plants and what I'd find at my local store?

Answer:
Our plants are definitely different in a few ways.

First off, not many mainstream garden centers carry truly terrarium appropriate plants, so the selection will most likely be limited by comparison. There are a ton of examples here, but the easiest one to identify would be our NEHERP Moss & Moss Slurry. Even other "specialty" companies have a tough time beating our proven mosses. Moss aside, we work with a couple hundred species of plants, and the overwhelming majority aren't shown on the plant menu since they are reserved for kit customers like you. We'll keep your inhabitant species in mind while we pull your assortment, so there's no guesswork!

Second, there's the issue of product support. When it comes to our plants, we've got your back with free vivarium consultations for all kit customers. Not sure where to plant or how to take care of a specific plant? We've got your back.

Finally, not all plants are the same - even if they are the same species of plant. Non-specialty companies can produce plants on a massive scale without breaking the bank thanks to pesticides, fungicides, and extended release fertilizers. All inorganic chemicals like that aren't really what we'd consider safe, but our biggest concern with plants sourced from mainstream grow operations would be systemic chemicals. Systemic insecticides & fungicides are super inexpensive, stupendously effective, and they are absorbed directly into & throughout a plants cells. They basically make a plant bulletproof from a grower's standpoint, while simultaneously making the plant useless for our hobby. Unlike standard pesticides & fungicides (which are plenty bad), systemic chemicals can't wash off, don't quickly dissipate, and can stay within a plant's cells for months or years. It's not always about what you'll get. Sometimes it's about what you'll avoid getting!

NEHERP Vivarium Moss
NEHERP Moss Care & Information
Our NEHERP Moss is a piece of cake to grow compared to most types of moss, especially using our Complete 8X8X8 Vivarium Kit! In short, we recommend frequent misting, bright lighting, and plenty of humidity to help get it acclimated. After a few weeks, less frequent misting & lower humidity will be better tolerated. We'd recommend reading through the detailed care article just to make sure you have a great experience with it.

About Our Vivarium Substrate Base Kits:
Our NEHERP base kits are a one click solution for all the high quality supplies you'll need to start a live vivarium off with the strongest foundation available. These are the same high quality NEHERP vivarium Substrates we offer individually, at the lowest prices we offer. Enough substrate & drainage media is included for an appropriate (2.4-2.6in deep) layer of each in your 8X8X8 Terrarium, which is exactly what's recommended as the ideal solution in Vivarium Construction 101. We include a pre-cut screen separator, and enough of our high quality screened leaf litter (assorted) to tie the entire base layers of the live vivarium together. A culture of Live Springtails is included in all Complete Kits at a full 20% off our low prices.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Answers to the 7 most common substrate related questions we receive!

Question:
What about a layer of Sphagnum on top of the substrate?
Answer:
Some vivarium builders (pro & enthusiast) add a thin layer of Sphagnum moss on top of the substrate layer. There are pros & cons to this practice, and neither way is wrong. Sphagnum can act as a barrier between the substrate and inhabitant species, to prevent particles from sticking to sticky species. (Frogs, salamanders, etc) For enclosures which are a little more dry (near 55% R/H), Sphagnum can hold a little extra moisture and lock it into the substrate layer below. It's softer than Substrate, and can easily be wrapped around moisture-sensitive plants when low humidity is an issue. On the downside, it does decrease the amount of air which can penetrate to the substrate layer, which can decrease it's lifespan. Sphagnum Moss itself will also break down faster than the substrate mix will overall, so it may end up needing to be replaced (or removed + replaced) sooner than the substrate would. In our opinion, Sphagnum's long fibers pose a little more of an impaction risk than NEHERP Moss, Leaf Litter, or Natural Wood Decor would as ground cover.

When we build vivariums at NEHERP, we typically don't add a layer of Sphagnum. For this reason, we don't include any in our substrate kits. If you'd prefer to add a layer of Sphagnum, you can add some at this link.

Question:
Can I use "X" as substrate instead?
Answer:
Improper substrate choice is one of the most common mistakes made by beginners, and is a leading cause for vivariums failing prematurely. Topics like drainage, aeration, pH balance, resistance to breaking down, and the ability to support flora + microfauna life long term should all be considered when choosing a vivarium substrate. Coconut fiber, peat, top soil, and/or potting soil (alone or mixed together) are not acceptable substrates for long term success in a live temperate/tropical vivarium. While coconut fiber and peat are ingredients in a live vivarium substrate, they make up a very small percentage of a proper vivarium substrate mix. Inappropriate substrates will compact over time and will not support plant, mycorrhizal fungi, or microfauna as effectively, or for as long as a vivarium substrate will. For a whole lot more info on this topic, check out Vivarium Construction 101's sections relating to substrate.

Question:
What about Isopods?
Answer:
Larger animal species might benefit from the use of Isopods, but they aren't necessary for every vivarium. Enclosures housing very small Frogs, Geckos, or no animal at all won't necessarily require the use of Isopods. If you'd like to add Isopods to your order, you can do so at this link.

Question:
How long will the substrate kit last?
Answer:
That depends on a tremendous number of different factors. Substrate used in enclosures which sit at 99% humidity year-round will inevitably break down a little faster than it would in a more typical 75-85% relative humidity range. Enclosures with lower humidity will see substrate last even longer. Adding a water feature will reduce the lifespan of substrate by half or more unless it's done with an incredible level of detail. (Separating all added moisture from the substrate layer) To put it simply, if a vivarium is set up and maintained as described in Vivarium Construction 101 & Vivarium Construction 102, we'd expect to see quite a few years out of a single base kit.

Question:
I read that I should bake and/or rinse substrate before using it?
Answer:
We don't recommend either. Any potential beneficial mycorrhizal fungi may be killed in the baking process, and our substrate doesn't have "bad stuff" in it which needs to be baked off. It's true that some types of Coconut Fiber should be rinsed before use, but we don't use typical horticultural coconut fiber in our mix. We use pet grade coconut fiber specifically labeled & sold for immediate use with Reptiles and Amphibians. The same claim "pet grade" statement also applies to our Fir Bark, & Cypress Mulch. Feel free to look into our ingredients list & production process. You won't be disappointed. :-)

Question:
What types of environments are these suited for?
Answer:
Our substrates are appropriate choices for environments ranging from 55% to 99% relative humidity. (Perfect for the vast majority of popular vivarium species!) Environments with humidity towards the lower end of that range may require more frequent misting to ensure the plants, microfauna, and mycorrhizal fungi have enough access to moisture to thrive.

Question:
Is this a "Self Cleaning" and/or "Bioactive" substrate?
Answer:
The substrate is considered biologically active, although that is a fairly broad term which we don't use too often outside of marketing. More specifically, our substrate is designed to sustain healthy populations of mycorrhizal fungi, beneficial microorganisms, and microfauna, which all work together to process detritus. If it's built to VC101 & VC102's specs, and there is enough light to support healthy plant growth, then the enclosure should be a fully functioning micro-ecosystem.

A vivarium's biology isn't nearly as simple as saying "Springtails eat all the waste within the enclosure". It's exponentially more complex & interesting than that. To ultra-simplify the basics into one giant run-on sentence: Healthy plant growth fosters the mutualistic relationship between plants & mycorrhizal fungi, the fungi help increase each plant's access to carbohydrates & nutrients, and the microfauna and other microorganisms feed on nutritious shed plant leaves, leaf litter, and decaying parts (fruiting bodies/mushrooms) of the fungi. The activity of each of these relationships increases as time goes on & populations grow. When an animal is eventually added, these processes can work together to help break down the associated waste. To sum it up, soil (or in this case substrate) biology is awesome.

Whether or not an enclosure is "self cleaning" (in terms of animal waste) depends on the size of the animal and the overall setup of the vivarium. In our experience, animals which digest plant, fruit, and insect matter produce waste which is far easier to break down than animals which consume larger & more complex organisms like vertebrates. Vivariums for Amphibians are easily designed to be self-cleaning. If you are working with any species of Gecko (from the tiniest Sphaerodactylus to the largest Rhacodactylus), you can rest assured the enclosure will be a fairly "hands off" affair. Invertebrates like Arachnids, Mantids, and more will be a piece of cake for the environment to process. Even most small-to-medium sized insectivorous & frugivorous lizards should require little-to-no cleanup. Larger species which consume a primary diet of vertebrates are more likely to require some spot cleaning within the enclosure. Building a live vivarium for a very large Reptile can be a fairly difficult process. Don't hesitate to contact us if you aren't sure!

About Our Vivarium Substrates:
Our company might be best known for our absolute top quality live vivarium substrate mixes, and we have three options available for our base kits. We developed our first commercially available blend in 2009, and have been constantly tweaking & improving it every year to ensure our clients get only the absolute best vivarium substrate on the market.

About Our Production Process:
We pre-mix & tightly bag each of our vivarium substrates for your convenience, and to ensure you get your money's worth in every gallon. Our custom-made food safe substrate mixing machine (nicknamed Brutus) helps our team churn out over one ton of substrate per month during our busy seasons. Although our shop has grown over the years, we still blend vivarium substrate in small (~30 gallon) batches to maintain a predictable & consistent mixture.

Substrate Ingredient: Charcoal Substrate Ingredient: Coconut Fiber Substrate Ingredient: Cypress Mulch Substrate Ingredient: Fir Bark Substrate Ingredient: Peat Moss Substrate Ingredient: Sphagnum Moss Substrate Ingredient: Tree Fern Fiber Substrate Ingredient: Calcined Clay

About Our Ingredients:
We use pet grade fir bark, pet grade coconut fiber, pet grade cypress mulch, AAA-Grade New Zealand Sphagnum (milled in-house), and OMRI certified Peat Moss in our Substrates. Hard-to-find Tree Fern Fiber, fine Calcined Clay, and rinsed/graded Natural Charcoal are added as long-lasting aggregates. In short, we literally use the best ingredients available in each of our vivarium substrates. Each of our three blends is designed to last long-term while maintaining a healthy pH, resisting compaction, supporting microfauna populations, fostering mycorrhizal fungi, and growing healthy plants.

Screen Separator
About The Screen Separator:
The screen separator is used to separate the drainage layer & substrate layer. The mesh pattern is small enough to ensure substrate particles don't fall into the drainage layer, and large enough to allow water to freely pass through without pooling. Since water can flow freely downward, the substrate layer won't be prone to oversaturation which helps extend it's lifespan. The fine mesh helps facilitate a healthy drainage layer by preventing substrate particles from falling through & either wicking water upwards, or breaking down in the water table. It's not an exciting product by any stretch of the imagination, but it gets the job done!

Lightweight Drainage Layer Substrate
About NEHERP LDL Substrate:
LDL (Lightweight Drainage Layer) Substrate is the ideal solution for a live environments lowest layer. It weighs significantly less than gravel pebbles, and has a tremendous amount of surface area for beneficial microbial activity. This helps cut down shipping costs, as well as the overall weight of a vivarium. The drainage layer is the lowest layer in a healthy vivarium environment, and the screen separator, substrate, and leaf litter are stacked above it. The drainage layer permits water to flow freely through the substrate layer during misting sessions, which helps to prevent over-saturation over time. As the environment begins to cycle, the drainage layer will become home to a beneficial population of natural microbes and bacteria.

Vivarium Leaf Litter
About The Leaf Litter:
Leaf Litter might seem like an unimportant addition at first, but it actually plays a crucial role in the life of a vivarium. In nature, most of a forest or jungle floor is covered in leaf litter, with plants & moss peeking out here & there. A top-layer of leaf litter is a great way to increase realism within an enclosure. More importantly, leaf litter releases nutrients into the substrate layer as it breaks down, while simultaneously acting as a food source for beneficial microfauna like Springtails & Isopods. Moss is a great looking floor for a vivarium, but leaving some areas covered with leaf litter will help ensure your live environment will look more realistic and perform better, too!

Info: Springtail Culture
Springtails are included in every complete kit at a full 20% off our usual low prices. These little hexapods (not insects!) are a critical part of the detritivore "cleanup crew" of a vivarium and can be used as a feeder for smaller animal species. This species (Folsomia candida) is one of the fastest to reproduce in the hobby, and does an excellent job helping to fragment natural detritus in a vivarium environment. One freshly started culture contains enough springtails to seed most larger sized enclosures, or several smaller ones. Our best selling mixed media cultures offer an easy way to introduce springtails directly into your vivarium by simply dumping the culture's contents directly onto your substrate layer (ideally just after adding plants but before adding leaf litter/moss). Once added, the springs will populate the habitat and should sustain a healthy population indefinitely.

The Ghostwood option you selected in your Custom Background Kit really can create some spectacular results, but we want to be clear that it's a little more difficult to work with than the Cork option. Depending on your overall design idea, it might be worth considering adding a little extra cork (separately) to work as a simple backdrop to build from. This is especially true if you intend to cover more than one side of the enclosure completely in a custom background!

The kit you've customized includes everything necessary to turn your 8X8X8 enclosure (not included) into a beautiful, healthy, and long lasting live ecosystem. Your supply list coincides with our comprehensive (and #1 ranked on Google!) Live Vivarium Construction articles, which can be used as a detailed set of instructions to put your enclosure together. By purchasing a complete vivarium kit, you'll also be covered by our basic vivarium consultation service, so you can count on our experienced team to help out if you have questions now or in the future. We're Your One Stop Vivarium Shop™, and we're always glad to help.
