Plant Maintenance
Most plants grown in a terrarium will require pruning from time to time, and we've got the tools to get the job done right. Whether you need a pair of plant pruning scissors or a plant propagation scalpel, we've got you covered. Most hobbyists with just one or two enclosures will do just fine using a pair of basic Hanzo Snips, while enthusiasts with larger-scale collections might want to use the heavier duty stainless steel pruners we most often use in-house. In any case, we've done our best to keep our prices some of the lowest out there!
Mounting Terrarium Plants To Custom Backgrounds Mounting Plants To Vivarium Backgrounds Supplies For Mounting Plants To Terrarium Backgrounds Best Way To Mount Plants To Terrarium Backgrounds
Plant Mounting & Training
Growing plants on backgrounds, wood decor, or other hardscape items can produce spectacularly realistic results within a bioactive terrarium environment. The supplies listed below are the same ones we use to design vivariums in-house, and we're confident you'll have good luck using our gear. Not every plant can be mounted to a background, so please be sure to check our plant pages for specific mounting advice. If a plant is listed as "scandent", it will happily grow upward on a background, and the Floral Mounting wire can help you train the plant to grow in the desired direction. If a plant is listed as "trailing", we'd recommend mounting it up high, and allowing it's leaves to naturally trail downward. Plants listed as "epiphytic" will not require substrate or sphagnum around their roots when they are being mounted, so long as the humidity & moisture levels are appropriate for the plant in question. (The term "epiphyte" describes any plant which typically grows on other plants, instead of in soil) Using the tools & advice found on this page, we're confident you'll be able to achieve the results you are looking for! :-)

Biobizz Individual Bottles

Individual 1-Liter Bottles Of Nutrient Concentrates

Bio Bizz Sampler
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
Bio Bloom, Bio Grow, Fish Mix, and Top Max are the most commonly used BioBizz products at NEHERP, and those are all available in discounted 250ml containers through the Nutrient Packs we offer. (That's the recommended option for 95% of our customers!) BioBizz discontinued all small bottles for individual purchase in 2018, leaving 1 liter bottles the smallest size available. Each can make up to 132 gallons of nutrient solution, so these are seriously overkill for most folks outside the hydroponic hobby. With that in mind, these larger bottles are special-order only from us, in an effort to ensure we ship the freshest product possible.

Manufacturer Descriptions:
Alg-A-Mic (0.1-0-0.2 NPK):
Alg-A-Mic is a revitalizing product made from a high-grade organic seaweed concentrate extracted through cold-press rather than chemical solvents. It contains a high content of trace elements and hormones of vegetable origin, naturally-occurring amino acids, and vitamins catering to the whole spectrum of plants' needs. It provides an exuberant green and is resistant to diseases. Download MSDSext. link.
Bio Bloom (1-2-2 NPK):
Bio Bloom is a complete liquid organic fertilizer containing a small amount of naturally occurring minerals such as nitrogen and and enough phosphorous and potassium to ensure exuberant flowering and fruit settings. Bio-Bloom also works in harmony with the soil to promote flowering and fruit production. Use Bio-Bloom with soil, soilless, or fortified coco as a complete fertilizer from the beginning of fruit or flower production until harvest. Download MSDSext. link.
Bio Grow (3-0-8 NPK):
Bio-Grow liquid organic plant food is a liquid fertilizer applicable to most types of dirt and substrate mixtures. Bio-Grow activates the substrates' bacterial flora due to its base of 100% of Dutch organic sugar beet extract, commonly known as molasses. Bio-Grow contains 70 trace elements and vitamins B1, B2, C, and E. As with all Biobizz products, it has low phosphate contents (phosphates are considered harmful to the body and to the environment). Download MSDSext. link.
Fish Mix (4-0-3 NPK):
Fish-Mix is a liquid organic plant food which conditions substrates to stimulate bacterial flora and accelerate growth. It is an infusion of organic fish emulsion from the North Sea mixed together with the horticultural extract of Dutch sugar beet. Fish-Mix boosts growth of all living organisms, as well as improving and stimulating production of micro organisms and useful bacteria in every type substrate. Using Fish-Mix can turn poor quality soil into rich and fat soil and provide your plants with natural nutrition. Download MSDSext. link.
Root Juice (0.1-0.1-0.1 NPK):
Root Juice organic bio-stimulants are a harmonious balance of premium humic and fulvic acids with seaweed. This product was formulated for organically promoting a vigorous root development and biological life of the radicular system, producing an explosive growth. Biobizz Nutrient Pack #1

Ultra-organic nutrients from the same brand we use in-house!

Bio Bizz Sampler
▾ Show Price & Description ▾

NEHERP Staff Description:
Bio Bizz's nutrients are about as natural & mild as it gets while still maintaining product effectiveness. This pack includes 250ml each of Bio Bloom (1-2-2 NPK), Fish Mix (4-0-3 NPK), and Top Max (0.2-0-0.1 + Micronutrients). In combination, these three products can be used to customize your own NPK nutrient ratio around your specific plant's needs. We've found the lower Phosphorus number helps to avoid bioaccumulation in the drainage layer, which is a concern with that particular nutrient. We often apply in a diluted 5-2-5 ratio, at 1-2ml of each ingredient per liter of water. (This concentrated pack can create up to 50 liters of nutrient solution!) Every plant is different and everyone's collection varies, so we strongly urge you to use caution, common sense, and tread lightly while working with any nutrient. Please be sure to do your research before applying! These are ultra-organic nutrients certified by a number of organizations, and the most-used nutrients in our grow rooms. We recommend only creating enough "ready to use" liquid to get you by for that particular day. Once diluted, the contents should be used fairly quickly to prevent spoilage. (We refrigerate our concentrates after opening)

Disclaimers:
1) Additional nutrients are most commonly required for bioactive terrariums which do not contain primary inhabitants. We use these outside of enclosures for the most part, so please use common sense and perform your due diligence when using any nutrient around animals. Most properly designed complete bioactive vivarium ecosystems will receive all the nutrients required from the animal's "natural fertilizer", beneficial leaf litter, and NEHERP Vivarium Substrate. If your enclosure's plants aren't thriving while housing an animal which does not require spot cleaning, we recommend considering variables like Lighting & Substrate before concluding the problem is nutrient related. In our experience, these products do not negatively impact beneficial detritivores like Springtails & Isopods, but they are not marked specifically for use around animals. That being said, we haven't been able to find any other brand which meets a higher standard of "stupendously organic". :-)
2) Totally organic nutrients smell totally organic. To be up front, it can be a little stinky at first. Don't over-do it with the nutrients (especially fish mix) if you'd like to keep the odor down. We fully understand this is probably a turn-off from a potential sale, and that's OK. It's a trade-off we're willing to make to keep things as organic as possible. If you are looking for a lower-odor solution and don't mind the trade-off for a slightly less balanced NPK ratio, we'd recommend the other BioBizz Nutrient Pack.

NEHERP Staff Description
One of the easiest methods for mounting plants to a background surface. These are the thicker (square center) picks that won't break as easily as the basic rounded type from a grocery store. (Ours are cheaper, too!) Cut off the ends of the picks once they are inserted into the background to make them as close to invisible as possible. A single pick can be angled into a custom background in an effort to train a plant to grow in a specific location, or two picks can be criss-crossed to box a plant into tricker spots. To illustrate how we've used these in the past, we've included a few freshly planted pictures below. (Click to view)

Plant Mounting Wire

Our original, super-easy floral mounting solution!

Terrarium Plant Mounting Wire Terrarium Plant Mounting Wire
On Sale Now!
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
Our textured floral mounting wire has been used by the hobby since 2010, with popularity increasing every year. Mounting wire can be used to mount many different types of plants to backgrounds, hardscape decor, and more. It's flexible enough to bend by hand, soft enough to cut with sharp scissors (or a wire cutter), and rigid enough to be poked into cork & poly foam backgrounds. It's also ideal for training plants to grow onto certain surfaces, and works great in combination with either of our background kits and included texture mix. Use Sphagnum Moss to wrap the roots of non-epiphytic plants, to allow for plenty of moisture retention. It's green, matte texture blends into backgrounds seamlessly, and can be further disguised with a little NEHERP Moss, if desired. These can naturally break down & dissolve after 10-24 months (depending on humidity), which leaves plenty of time for any plant to grow it's own supporting roots.

Having Plant Trouble In A Bioactive Terrarium?

We can help troubleshoot!

▾ Learn More ▾

Reviewing the most common causes of plants failing to thrive! :-)

Substrate Analysis
Poor substrate is the #1 cause of premature environmental failure, and one of the most common reasons microfauna & plants fail to thrive. This is a common problem with DIY mixes, as well as other blends which don't actually list ingredients or (at least rough) ratios. A properly designed substrate mix will be quick-draining, slightly acidic, have the ability to resist compaction, and should be able to support microfauna & mycorrhizal fungi long-term. Like the original and most proven ABG Mix, all of our NEHERP Substrates contain a mix with over 80% aggregates like like tree fern fiber, fine fir bark, fine hardwood charcoal, calcined clay, and/or cypress mulch. Low-end mixes have far less aggregate material which contributes to premature compaction and a half-dozen other problems. If you are curious, please learn more about our substrates, or see exactly what we'd recommend for your enclosure.

Lighting Analysis
One of the most common causes of poor plant performance in bioactive terrariums is poor lighting, and the problem is most commonly found with knock-off or low-end LEDs. Our support department has seen dozens of cleverly marketed "grow lights" which have comparatively poor PAR light performance compared to brands like Current, Jungle Dawn, Jungle Hobbies, and Value Grow. Many LEDs which look the same have major differences in measurable PAR & Lux performance due to better brands using higher-end diodes & drivers. If your lighting didn't come from our company and your plants aren't thriving, we recommend comparing the light source to the solutions we recommend, and checking the PAR output of each. (See PAR ratings of every LED we carry towards the bottom of Vivarium Lighting 101) We've been specializing in this stuff since 2009, and customers who use our lighting solutions have an awesome track record of success.
Other Common Problems
• Our substrates, plants, and microfauna are recommended for environments which will sustain a bare minimum of 55% R/H.
• If you are growing NEHERP Moss or Moss Slurry, please check the care sheets for advice. (High humidity & PAR will be required)
• Be sure to place plants (especially Neoregelias & Tillandsias) appropriately. Check Vivarium Construction 101 for suggestions.
• Ensure custom backgrounds are completely cured before adding plants, since the fumes from uncured silicone can kill plants!
• If your enclosure contains an animal which requires spot cleaning, additional fertilization for plants may be necessary.
