About Term #7:
The following section limits our liability on all Instant Reward products, and we want to be clear about why it's necessary. Our Instant Rewards cost customers just $0.01, but typically retail for between $3.00-$35.00 depending on the qualifying reward bracket. These products cost us just as much as they normally do, so we're offering each at a 99.99% loss. For that reason, we simply can't afford to replace or reship Instant Rewards under any circumstances. Our team will do everything we can to ensure things arrive safely (as they usually do), but we can't over-extend ourselves by replacing products which were offered at a 99.99% loss. Our usual guarantees still apply to everything else in the order, just not the Instant Reward.

7) Money back, replacement, and perishable guarantees don't apply to Instant Rewards
7a) The maximum potential refund for any reward sold for $0.01 is $0.01, regardless of MSRP
7b) No reshipment or replacement guarantee applies to any supply item rewards sold for $0.01
7c) No healthy arrival guarantee applies to any plant, feeder, or microfauna reward sold for $0.01
7d) Adding an Instant Reward doesn't affect the (usually awesome) guarantee of other products in an order
7e) See #8 for live animal info

About Term #8:
We can afford to give a few animals away to awesome clients like you, but we can't afford to absorb any of the shipping costs associated with doing so. In other words, we'll cover the cost of the animal(s) if you cover the cost of the shipping fee. On a personal note, our team actually loves this deal. Many animal freebies are sent to clients who purchase Complete Vivarium Kits, so we feel good knowing the little critter(s) are going to a great home. :-)

8e) Healthy arrival replacement/refund guarantees apply, not including shipping cost
8f) If an animal is DOA & no replacement is available, a refund may be the only recourse ($0.01)

A bizarre looking pseudobulbous air plant that tolerates a fairly wide range of conditions. One of our favorites at NEHERP, the colors range from a deep purple to a bright green, with appearance being dictated by growing conditions. A fairly moisture-tolerant species that doesn't require as much air movement as many other Tillandsias.

NEHERP Staff Description:
These Ghostwood straights are a great lower-cost option for those looking for a simpler, straighter, and less "spread out" piece of Ghostwood. (Sometimes a super-branchy piece of wood just isn't the right fit!) We've used these to create the look of fallen branches, rigid vines, partially buried roots, and more. When creating custom backgrounds, these can be added as additional focal points around a larger hardscape, or even as a part of a centerpiece in small enclosures. Ghostwood gets darker when moist, as shown in this picture. Please note, although we refer to these as "straights" at NEHERP, they aren't completely straight, and have plenty of variation! (They are fairly straight when compared to our best-selling Ghostwood branches) Please reference the photo above, as each piece can range a bit in overall shape & appearance.

Manzanita Branches

Extremely detailed & rigid wood, suitable for a wide variety of habitats

Manzanita
Picture representative of 13-24in pieces. See description for details.
▾ Show Description ▾
NEHERP Staff Description:
Raw, light, extremely intricate Manzanita wood. We don't sell the "solid line/log" Manzanita, only the very detailed "branchy" type (shown above) that looks great in a wide variety of conditions. Manzanita is suitable for both dry & humid habitats. Mounting these pointing downward in a custom background yields an amazing "root system" look. We guarantee you'll love the selection!
Sizing/Grading Note:
We now grade & hand-cut our Manzanita Branches in-house to provide the highest quality product possible. The smaller 6-9in piece will have a smaller overall diameter than the photo above. We find this size perfect for dwarf species, small terrariums, accent decor, and more. The photos are an accurate representation of what you'll receive for pieces ranging from 13-24in. The 25-28in size is typically even more detailed, however they aren't available to us as often as we'd like!

▾ Show Description ▾
A New England Herpetoculture Product:

Our carefully proportioned substrate was designed to be the ideal blend for tropical live vivarium ecosystems ranging from 75-99% R/H. Having been in production since 2009, ours is the longest-running & most proven store brand substrate mix available for bio-active enclosures. Our substrate is packed with an appropriate quantity of aggregate ingredients which help it to to resist over-saturation and compaction, while remaining nice & airy long term. During product development, our goal was for NEHERP Substrate to support flourishing plant life, and foster healthy populations of microfauna, mycorrhizal fungi, and beneficial microbes. Each of these trophic layers of biological activity are necessary for the enclosed environment to function as desired once the primary inhabitant is introduced. We're proud to say that our substrate is used by zoos, museums, breeders, and enthusiasts all over the USA, and we're confident that it's the highest quality & best performing pre-mixed vivarium substrate on the market. Read more...

We're open & honest about what's in our substrate for a reason. Our ingredients are absolutely top of the line, and we don't skimp on any of the important stuff. We work directly with one of the last tree fern importers in the USA, and even mill our own from time to time to help keep up with demand. Our coconut fiber is sourced directly from a mainstream pet supply brand - not from a horticultural supplier whose less expensive product may have higher salinity. Same goes for the fir bark, which is specifically marked for use with Reptiles & Amphibians. Even the Sphagnum Moss is the same brand we carry separately, which is AAA-Grade New Zealand sourced product. The pre-rinsed charcoal ingredient is a fine-milled natural hardwood product sourced from an American-based manufacturer. If you can think of a way to use higher quality ingredients, we'd sure love to hear how. :-)

A New England Herpetoculture Product:

Our NEHERP V2 Vivarium Substrate Blend was specially designed for a wider humidity range than our tropical V1 mix. Thanks to a tweak in the (equally high quality) ingredients list, we're able to recommend this blend for live vivarium ecosystems ranging from 55-90% relative humidity. The wider range of acceptable conditions makes this our most versatile blend, and we've had success using it with everything ranging from Dart Frogs to Geckos. Having been tested & used consistently since 2012, this blend has been universally well received by a wide variety of enthusiast communities, and has even passed out our original substrate in popularity! When used as described in our VC101 & VC102 articles, this substrate will support plant life, as well as populations of microfauna, mycorrhizal fungi, and beneficial microbes with ease. We're proud to say that this blend is used by zoos, museums, nature centers, breeders, and hobbyists all over the USA! Read more...

Like all of our NEHERP substrates, this mix includes only the absolute highest-grade ingredients available. The coconut fiber, cypress mulch, and fir bark ingredients are all sourced from a mainstream pet supply brand which specifically manufacturers each for Reptile & Amphibian use. The Sphagnum is AAA-Grade New Zealand sourced product, and both the calcined clay & fine grade charcoal are sourced from a trusted US-based manufacturer. We're really proud of this mix, and we're confident you'll absolutely love it.

NEHERP Vivarium Substrate: ABG Mix

▾ Show Description ▾
We use the original ABG recipe: 2 Parts Tree Fern Fiber, 1 Part Peat Moss, 1 Part Charcoal, 1 Part Sphagnum Moss, 2 Parts Fir Bark
NEHERP Staff Description:

Authentic ABG mix is often regarded as "industry standard" by enthusiasts, and has been a proven solution for vivarium substrate since long before NEHERP opened for business. In our experience, this blend is best for enclosures which will range from 75%-99% relative humidity. To ensure the best quality product for our customers, we use only the highest quality ingredients available in our ABG mix. Our Sphagnum moss is AAA grade from New Zealand, our peat moss is OMRI listed from Canada, and both our Fir Bark & Coconut Fiber ingredients are sourced from a pet supply brand. Tree fern is increasingly difficult to find nowadays, but we've secured a source & even periodically mill our own tree fern fiber out of raw tree fern in-house. Because it contains peat moss (which is hydrophobic), we strongly recommend pre-moistening this substrate by mixing water into it before using it in a vivarium. Read more...

Not all ABG Mix is the same. We stick closely to the original recipe (posted above), but it seems that the overwhelming majority of commercially available ABG Mix follows a different set of ingredients. Even with identical ratios, our ABG Mix is designed to stand out thanks to it's higher-grade of ingredients (described above). If you are shopping around for prices, please be sure to compare both ingredients and the grades of ingredients. We're proud to offer the best ABG mix available, and that's not a gimmick. In New Englander terms, "It's wicked good substrate!". :-) With that said, both types of NEHERP Vivarium Substrate are actually higher in micronutrient contents, lower in acidity, and are also not hydrophobic. (Authentic ABG mix is awesome, but we like the performance of our NEHERP brand stuff even more!)

Fruit Fly Media: NEHERP Hydei Media

Our Hydei-optimized fruit fly media

NEHERP Fruit Fly Media For Hydei
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
A New England Herpetoculture Product
This media was developed on the backbone of our best-selling original NEHERP Fruit Fly Media, with extra protein, amino acids, and vitamins added to boost production rates. (No hand-mixing or boiling water required!) Like our Original blend, the Hydei mix produces extremely quickly, smells great, and continues to produce for a long period of time. Each pound of our media concentrate makes 10 32oz fly cultures when mixed to our quick & easy instructions. The new Vinegar Sprayer (in-cart) option includes a simple spray bottle full of white vinegar, which makes creating even more effective cultures quick & easy.
Important: The extra goodies in this media which make it extra effective for Hydei make it far less effective for Melanogaster varieties. If you are looking for a single media to raise both types of flies, we'd recommend the original blend.

Fly Culture: D. melanogaster

The best wingless D. melanogaster fruit fly cultures

The Best D. melanogaster Fruit Fly Cultures Closeup: D. melanogaster Fruit Fly

▾ Show Description ▾

About Our Cultures:

Fruit Flies are an excellent food source for dart frogs and many other small amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. Our super-high quality 32oz fruit fly cultures are one of the best selling items we create at NEHERP, and we've spent years developing methods to ensure our cultures remain top-quality in the industry. Each Fruit Fly Culture is created using our NEHERP Fruit Fly Media, to ensure each will produce quickly, create huge numbers, and last a long while. Our fruit fly culture storage room is temperature/humidity controlled, and is sealed to ensure cultures remain super clean. This also helps us to ensure they will predictably & reliably produce on time, every time. Between the unique creation & storage methods, reliable packing/shipping methods, and an awesome perishable shipping policy, we're confident you'll love our fruit fly cultures. (Not as much as your pets will, though!) :-D

About The Flies:

D. melanogaster is our smallest fly which produces quickly and in large numbers. Turkish Glider flies reproduce just as fast & in as many numbers as D. melanogaster, but are slightly larger & have the ability to hop & glide in an enclosure. D. hydei flies are larger, more bold, and produce slower & in smaller numbers. Golden hydei is our largest fly, and produces about the same (if night slightly faster) than typical D. hydei. If you'd like to try your hand at creating your own fruit fly cultures, we offer everything you need to make your own high quality fruit fly cultures on our Insect Breeding Supplies page. We suggest newer hobbyists start with the more forgiving D. melanogaster or Turkish Glider species, since they reproduce faster than their larger Hydei relatives.

Fly Culture: D. hydei

The best wingless D. hydei fruit fly cultures

The Best D. hydei Fruit Fly Cultures Closeup: D. hydei Fruit Fly

D. hydei is our smallest fly which produces quickly and in large numbers. Turkish Glider flies reproduce just as fast & in as many numbers as D. hydei, but are slightly larger & have the ability to hop & glide in an enclosure. D. hydei flies are larger, more bold, and produce slower & in smaller numbers. Golden hydei is our largest fly, and produces about the same (if night slightly faster) than typical D. hydei. If you'd like to try your hand at creating your own fruit fly cultures, we offer everything you need to make your own high quality fruit fly cultures on our Insect Breeding Supplies page. We suggest newer hobbyists start with the more forgiving D. hydei or Turkish Glider species, since they reproduce faster than their larger Hydei relatives.

Ghostwood Straights Ghostwood Straights Ghostwood Straights
▾ Show Description ▾
9-12in Example
13-16in Example
21-25in Example

The Best D. melanogaster 'Turkish Glider' Fruit Fly Cultures Closeup: D. melanogaster 'Turkish Glider' Fruit Fly

D. melanogaster 'Turkish Glider' is our smallest fly which produces quickly and in large numbers. Turkish Glider flies reproduce just as fast & in as many numbers as D. melanogaster 'Turkish Glider', but are slightly larger & have the ability to hop & glide in an enclosure. D. hydei flies are larger, more bold, and produce slower & in smaller numbers. Golden hydei is our largest fly, and produces about the same (if night slightly faster) than typical D. hydei. If you'd like to try your hand at creating your own fruit fly cultures, we offer everything you need to make your own high quality fruit fly cultures on our Insect Breeding Supplies page. We suggest newer hobbyists start with the more forgiving D. melanogaster 'Turkish Glider' or Turkish Glider species, since they reproduce faster than their larger Hydei relatives.

▾ Show Description ▾
A New England Herpetoculture Product:

Manzanita Branches

Fruit Fly Media: NEHERP Original

Our best selling & top performing fruit fly media!

NEHERP Fruit Fly Media
▾ Show Price & Description ▾
A New England Herpetoculture Product
Our premium Original NEHERP Fruit Fly Media was precisely formulated to maximize the lifespan & production of your flies. Originally developed in 2010 and constantly tweaked over the years, our media produces extremely quickly, smells great, and continues to produce for a long period of time. NEHERP Fruit Fly Media requires no hand mixing or boiling water, so cultures can be built extremely quickly and without a mess. Each bag sold includes free active yeast (to maximize production & longevity), and complete instructions on how to build your own cultures. In our most recent testing of our V.4 media against 3 other brands, ours proved to be the best fruit fly media in terms of longevity & production for D. melanogaster flies. (It works well with D. hydei, too.) You won't be disappointed! Each pound of our media concentrate makes 10 large 32oz fly cultures when mixed to our instructions. The new Vinegar Sprayer (in-cart) option includes a simple spray bottle full of white vinegar, which makes creating even more effective cultures quick & easy.

While we were prepping to move to a new location, we collected nearly two full pallets of products which we either no longer sell, have never sold, or have seen discontinued at the manufacturers. We also put together a borderline comical amount of overstock items in the process. After 10+ years of doing business, we figure now is a great time for some customer-assisted housekeeping. Multiple items may be included for a single mystery purchase, and we promise you'll get your money's worth! :-)

NEHERP Vivarium Substrate: ABG Mix

A mixture pioneered by the experts at Atlanta Botanical Gardens

ABG Substrate NEHERP ABG Vivarium Substrate  NEHERP Atlanta Botanical Gardens Vivarium Substrate
ABG Substrate NEHERP ABG Vivarium Substrate
On Sale Now!

Insider Special: Common Vine / Trailing Plant

An ultra-discounted 3in potted plant

Vine Background Plant Pack For Terrariums
On Sale Now!
▾ Show Plant Description ▾
This insider special will include a common and easy to grow plant which are perfect for beginner budgets & those who have trouble keeping plants alive. Rather than focusing on higher-value or rarity, these packs include plants which are incredibly forgiving, fast-growing, and inexpensive. This special may include more aggressive-growing & common houseplant style varieties which aren't generally included in our Standard & Heavy Duty packs. We'd consider these appropriate for grow-outs, beginner terrariums, low-light environments, and in enclosures where more frequent plant pruning is an acceptable trade-off for ease of care & super-low pricing. Plant varieties may include Callisia, Epipremnum, Ficus, Hedera, Hoya, Philodendron, Tradescantia, and similar Genres.

D. hydei 'Golden' is our smallest fly which produces quickly and in large numbers. Turkish Glider flies reproduce just as fast & in as many numbers as D. hydei 'Golden', but are slightly larger & have the ability to hop & glide in an enclosure. D. hydei 'Golden' flies are larger, more bold, and produce slower & in smaller numbers. Golden hydei is our largest fly, and produces about the same (if night slightly faster) than typical D. hydei 'Golden'. If you'd like to try your hand at creating your own fruit fly cultures, we offer everything you need to make your own high quality fruit fly cultures on our Insect Breeding Supplies page. We suggest newer hobbyists start with the more forgiving D. hydei 'Golden' or Turkish Glider species, since they reproduce faster than their larger Hydei relatives.

▾ Show Plant Description ▾
A bizarre looking pseudobulbous air plant that tolerates a fairly wide range of conditions. One of our favorites at NEHERP, the colors range from a deep purple to a bright green, with appearance being dictated by growing conditions. A fairly moisture-tolerant species that doesn't require as much air movement as many other Tillandsias.

We recommend mounting them near a vent, or anywhere in an enclosure which has at least some airflow.
Allow to dry out between misting sessions, and do not place this species in the direct line of a misting nozzle.
Visit our Tillandsia care guide for in-depth advice on how to keep these successfully in a live vivarium enclosure
